Got My First Whip - It's a Duluth

Post by JR »

After reading posts that recommended the Duluth whip as a cheap-priced, but quality whip, I decided to get one. Originally, I wanted get a cheap whip on Ebay. After looking at the pictures of the cheap whips and watching videos on basic whip cracking, I decided against that. I practically ripped open the shipping box today. When I opened the box, I was half expecting it to look like the cheap ones on Ebay. But, the whip actually looks like a good quality 8 foot whip for only $70. It has a nice whooshing sound. I'm not sure if the cracker makes a good pop since this is my first whip. Also, the Duluth site didn't give any specs on the whip, so I'm not sure if it's an eight plait. I'm just guessing it's eight by the looks of it.

That looks great especially for the price! Much better than other "cheap" whips I have seen.

Not bad...is this the "DuluthTrading.com" whip? Does it have the swivel handle like their website states?

I must admit that must get annoying if it does.

Congratulations JR. Do you know what is inside?

It looks like it can handle some cracking, though how it will age remains to be seen. You'll know you've made a good crack when it sounds like a riffle being fired! Enjoy.

Yes, it's the same one from that website. The handle does swivel, but it only swivels slightly to the left and right. It doesn't swivel 360 degrees and you barely notice it swiveling most of the time.

There's definitely no rifle sound, otherwise I wouldn't be swinging it anywhere near my body. I keep hitting my backside when I do the overhead crack. But, it's ok since I barely feel it. I don't know what's on the inside yet. I'll have to wait until it cracks open first (Hopefully, not for a while).

The same night I created this discussion, a co-worker who had stayed late at work (we left at midnight) actually showed me some overhead cracks. It turns out he was a ranch hand back in Haiti. And, he got the rifle sound, though it is not as loud as one of Canuck's video I've seen. Unfortunately, he cracked the whip on concrete (I told him not to crack it that hard) so there's some scuff marks. At least, with a few minutes of practice the next day, I was able to get rifle sound.
