I was wondering what was the pocket compass Indy used.
Also,

Does anyone know what type of compass was used in the
Movie OUT OF AFRICA?

The scene is where Denys (Redford) gives Karen (Streep) a compass.

I think in one of the books (IJC) it was mentioned. And, wasn't there a compass in the "Fate of Atlantis" game?


My guess, if you keep it to the era, it would be a "lensatic compass". Here's one that is a military issue:

I gave one of these WWI versions that I found to my daughter, the archaeologist, who put it in her field bag, and has used it on several digs. Very functional, and is even jeweled. You can find originals in a lot of surplus stores. Regards. Michaelson

There is a picture from the maproom in which Indy can be seen scribbling in his notebook and holding a compass. I have it somewhere on my hard drive, maybe I'll post it tomorrow if I find it.

It looks lenstatic to me too. My lenstatic is an original U.S. Army issue so it's green. The photo above is B & W so I guess I'm gonna have to watch the movie again to see what color it is. Darn.

You can find a nice replica on eBay for under 20 bucks just do a search for "WWII Compass."

Here's one. This guy always has several of these for sale if you don't have, or are unwilling to spend, the money for a real, working antique.

I remember seeing that style or something very much like it in the Sportsman Guide Catalog a few months back.

Just thought I'd share a photo of a family heirloom. A compass that my father used in the British navy in WWII. If someone was killed in action his shipmates would auction all his non-standard kit and send the money to his widow or sweetheart. My dad is still alive but the compass has two names other than his associated with it. I use it regularly as a reminder of what sacrifices have been made by our ancestors.

Indy could have carried a Brunton Pocket Transit. A little bigger than a standard compass, but much more accurate. Not so good for the quick adventure but a good tool for the dig site in setting up a control system.





I've been on the search for one of the vintage models myself in quadrant format instead of azimuth. Not super accurate in this day & age of GPS but it is a handy tool nonetheless. Just finding an affordable one it the tricky part. Seems there are plenty of folks looking for them. Oh well, such is life.

I got a knock-off Brunton from The Site That Shall Not Be Linked a while back. It is a seriously solid and heavy piece of machined brass. Perfect for surveying digs, finding hidden map rooms, or as a wheel chock for your flying wing.

Way too heavy for a pocket compass, IMHO.

Just an aside, but you mentioned "Out of Africa" and might already know but Bernie Pollock did the Clothing etc for that also as well as lot of his brother's Sidney's movies as well as Redford's as has been mentioned
