I was thinkin of a new ribbon for my Fed Deluxe and i was thinkin of makin the bow as per
http://www.dalexs.whitvani.net/ and then makin a and attaching it to an already sewn together piece of ribbon that is slighty smaller then the crown of my fed and squeezin it on over the crown and hence gettin the reverse taper look and that channel that extends from the bash down behind the ribbon in the cairo bar scene.. with a few tweaks here and there i think i can make it look "SA".. i just bought 5 yards of dark brown/black grosgrain ribbon.. anyone ever try this?

I think 3thoubucks has done a lot of customizing on his fedoras, including tightening the ribbon. If you use the search function you should get a lot of useful topics on this.

That's actually how I used to put my ribbons on. I'd premake the whole thing, fitting the length for a snug fit.
When I'd pull it on, it would give a very little reverse taper.
Go for it.

does it look good?

I thought so. I'd have to look around for pics of it. The avatar photo is definately one, albeit small.
I think it works nicely. Just don't overdue it.
My FED was one that was just a bit big and it solved that problem as well.

Assembling the ribbon first and sliding it over the crown is a lot easier than trying to sew a ribbon on while pulling it tight at the same time.

I actually just replaced the ribbon of my JPD fedora with a darker ribbon from Todd. I wish I had consulted Dalexs' tutorial before I did it. I don't think my bow turned out bad, but I see how I could have done it better. I'll probably be replacing the ribbon on my Federation soon, so I'll be able to do a better job on that one. I'll post pics of the JPD tonight to see what you guys think.

On the other hand, I do it the hard way now, so the main ribbon takes the stress and the bow not so much, and so only one bow corner is hard to tack, not two, plus, doing it the easy way is a bit more hit or miss..

When I did it the
easy way I actually used to use
Stitch Witch.
It is a type of iron-on tape used for holding hems in place while sewing them. It was great because if I made it too small or too big, I'd just reheat it with the iron and move it a bit.
It pretty much took the hit or miss factor out.
Don't tell me you actually used to sew it 3k$ ?

i think todd's ribbon is a bit like and not really "the" exact ribbon.. the edging is all wrong IMO

Todd's ribbon isn't all bad. It's darker than most dark brown ribbons out there, but it's only halfway to being truly SA. Pictured from top to bottom - Hat supply dark brown, Todd's ribbon, and my AB.

dont get me wrong todd's ribbon is great just not SA for me.. i had to really sew it on really tight to get it to not stretch out

Yeah, ok, but what do you think of my BOW? I didn't get a great "flying V" because of the way I stitched it. I've got the ribbon stretched pretty tight around the hat, and didn't even bother tack stitching it down, except for the bow itself. I actually noticed the hat fit a little tighter when I was done.
As far as Todd's ribbon goes, obviously I have not seen many of the offerings out there. It seems plenty dark to me - much darker that Jimmy Pierce's and slightly darker than the ribbon on my Fed. Not that I'll ever feel up to replacing the ribbon on my JPD, but for future reference, what would you suggest?

Captain RS, the bow looks great. IMO, that's the best way to put a new ribbon on a hat. I've replaced ribbons several ways, but I've had the most success making the complete loop and sliding it over the top of the crown. If it's not a perfect fit, it's an easy fix, but once you get it sewn down, it's a lot more work to fix it.

Thanks, Mark. It was your hat-making tutorial that gave me the idea to re-do my ribbon (and to reblock my hats). I was certain of the measurement that I needed before I stitched it, but then I stitched the heck out of it. I'd almost trust the loop to hold my weight because I placed three rows of stitching down the center of the bow holding everything together. That's why I wasn't able to get a good flying V. It was all I could do to get the center of the bow to crinkle at all.
By the way, I have a couple of questions for you.
1. Do you have a template or pattern that you use to cut your liners?
2. Where can I get a replacement sweatband. I still haven't replaced the sweatband in my Federation after shrinking it.

I got both my liner and the sweatband from Hatsupply.com (I went with the more expensive liner - the one they claim Stetson uses), so I don't have a "pattern". It probably wouldn't be too hard to figure out how to make one by looking at one of the liners in the hats you've already got, but it's probably easier just to buy them premade. The sweatbands they have are alright, but there are better one's out there for sure.

The reason I ask is that I bought my JPD from Coronado3, and the liner had his name stitched into it. So, I just separated the cap of the liner from the "wall," bought some satin, and created a new liner with the old cap. However, the dimensions are off, so I've got bunching in some places. Maybe I'll just replace the whole thing.

Do AB's come with gold liners?

AB comes with a white liner and a gold "Staff of Ra" crest. AB Deluxe has a white liner and a red and gold crest. By the new year, they'll have started using their new logo. As we've seen it on screen, it's blue and yellow (but I'm sure that'll translate to blue and gold once they are made).

I noticed last night that Indy's hat liner looked gold in the scene at the end of CS. I don't recall noticing the color of the hat liner at the beginning of the movie, but I wasn't really watching for it.

I read somewhere here in the boards that Steve and Marc used white liners, but they were dyed once they got on set. I can easily imagine offwhite looking gold in the right liner. Satin is inherently shiny, anyway.
