I was wondering what the turn around time is on a whip?.....im particularly interested in a Strain whip?....any opinions whether this is a descent choice for a first whip?

It was my first choice based on everyone's recommendations who speak of Joe as one of the best!
I then followed it with a Del Carpio. Who is also highly recommended from everyone here and really wonderful at getting that "Morgan" style.
I am currently waiting on both. I ordered my Strain last month (April 21), telling Joe I was in no rush for the May 22nd deadline as I didn't need my whip by then. He told me that he wouldn't be able to work on my whip for 5-6 weeks. However he did say that once he got to it, it would take 1-and-a-half days to finish.
Bernado was really friendly and highly recommended as well. I missed out on a KotCS-style he had up for sale in the Bazaar but he said he would be willing to make one for me. I ordered that one April 26th and told him to put me on the 'non-rush' list as well. However, he said it might be a few weeks considering all the other rush orders he had.
Good time to be a Indy style whipmaker!!!

Thanks that puts things into a little more perspective
...I think i'm leaning more towards the Strain at the moment...I was hoping to have it for august-ish...I was going to go for an 8ft, whats that size like for a complete beginner who has never even held a whip?
Cheers

Joe Strain does terrific work.
Getting one of his whips the first time out is about as good as it gets. Like by-passing a Ford/Chevy and going directly to a BMW.
He has a beautiful looking whip in his "Specials" section, which would probably ship immediately-$600.00 as I recall.
In the past getting a whip from Joe was a matter of few days- now, due to the Indiana Jones furor, several weeks.

That size is fine and it is the shortest of the "Indy whip lengths".
You might want to give Joe an e-mail and see what his turn-around time is right now. I know there is a rush for the May 22nd deadline but he might get another slew of orders AFTER the movie for those who get caught up with Indy-fever after seeing the movie.
