Plan B: How to make a CE shirt?

Watching the new Todd’s shirt pictures is pure torture to me! I ordered mine a month ago, but still no news from Todd so I assume it haven’t been shipped yet, so I’m going with Plan B: Make my own close enough shirt for this Thursday!

Where should I start? I have been looking everywhere for a close enough shirt unsuccessfully, so right now my emergency plan is to get an (expensive) airliner pilot shirt and dye it.

Should I use Khaki and Grey dye? Any tip on how to achieve a decent color on a white cotton shirt? Anything else I should know?

I thank on advance any help you can provide.

Me right now ----> :cry:

Hi Fink

If you really want to have an indy shirt for your collection I would advise you not to buy this shirt. Save your money for a better purchase.
In any case, if you decide to buy it and re-dye it follow this:

I am using Dylon dyes. I don't know if where you live there is any availability of them. If you have RIT dye then follow the "bone" or Dalexs' recipe.

Good luck!

Order the LL Bean Cotton Poplin field shirt with expidited shipping. It's a great shirt.

Or the same shipping on a Cabela's Safari shirt. Indy fans always compliment me on those.

The airline pilot shirt will be 100% polyester, so it is resistant to dying, as well as really uncomfortable. I wouldn't go anywhere near it unless I was actually an airline pilot.

I have both the LL Bean poplin shirt, and the Cabela's safari shirt. Both are great shirts and would make a much better "close enough" until your shirt from Todd arrives. Even though I like the fit and feel of the Bean shirt, I'd recommend the Cabela's shirt over it. Mostly because it is half the cost of the Bean shirt, and since you're probably going to wear it only once before your (much superior) shirt from Todd arrives I figure why not go cheap?

If you want to modify a shirt, you need a coulpe of uniform dress shirt, look at a surplus store or ebay (raf grey dress uniform shirts for example) and then add the front pleats, it's quite easy, you just have to remove the pockets and un-stitch a little part of the shoulder seam, then add a fabric stripe (using the other shirt with the same material and color), and sew it on the shirt, re-stitch the shoulder seam and re-attach the pockets, I did it as a test the other week, and for being almost a noob with the needle, it came out quite nicely 8)

I already did! Almost two months ago I ordered a LL Bean, but national customs wanted to charge me over %600 tax over the shirt price and then the regular taxes just because it was made in China, so I had to return it. #-o

If it’s made in most Asian countries then the taxes are really abusive here, but if it’s made in the US, then I have to pay much more reasonable taxes! So I found out, very unfortunately for me, that all LL Bean or Cabela's are made in China, so there’s not a choice for me there.

I guess WinstonWolf359 is right about the pilot shirt, so I’m going to modify a cotton shirt as recommended by Ramiel and use indygr tutorial for the dye! It should be enough for a few times (I already have my tickets for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday!)

Thank you for your help guys, I really appreciate it!!! :tup: :tup:
