Club Obi Wan

I have two Indy Jackets. One is a brand new Wested Jacket that I will wear for more civilized occasions, and the other is an early Disney Jacket that was made with distessed leather, and looks great as a costume piece. I have worn it over the years giving it quite a bit of additional aging. What can I do to treat and preserve these jackets? I really don't want to put any 'junk' petroleum based conditioners on them.

Oh, and Michaelson is our resident expert on the subject, I'm sure he'll chime in after the weekend. What leather are your jackets?

I suggest you to use Pecard dressing on cowhide only, not on lambskin!

Lexol on lambskin works very well. I have had my Wested ToD Lamb jacket for 7 years. I Lexol it once every spring before I put it away for the summer. I think for Lamb, Lexol is the answer; it’s easy to find in any Tack store.

Has anybody tried the standard Pecards dressing on lambskin? Any reason not to use it?

Yes, believe it or not, you CAN use a LIGHT (repeat, LIGHT) coating of standard Pecards on lambskin, but I mean go LIGHT!!! (Did I mention 'light'? Ok, just wanted to make sure. )

Standard dressing contains beeswax, and considering lambskin has such tight pores, it doesn't take much for the leather to soak up what it needs from Pecards. To much, and you will have an EXTREMELY tacky jacket that, though reversable, is a pain to have to deal with.

Lexol, Letaps, or Pecards Motorcycle Leather Lotion has been the standard products for lambskin over the years, and they all do a GREAT job....but all three are water based products. Great cleaner/conditioners, but not exactly the best for weather treatment.

If you're looking for something to help keep the lambskin water resistant, a VERY VERY VERY light coating of standard Pecards works fine. Allow to soak in overnight, then buff to a glow with a clean cotton cloth. I've found old tee shirts to be the perfect tool for that job.

Pecards 'cream' is actually a jell. It's standard Pecards without beeswax. GREAT product for use on really stiff leather like goatskin or cowhide. I personally use this product more than any of the others.

I am not new to COW, but new to the Leather Jacket side of things. Can anyone tell me if Neats Foot Oil is any good for careing for a Wested Lambskin Raiders, and if so; how do you use it?
