wondering how much you all wear your fedora? do you wear it everyday? i have a dorfman but hardly wear it. love the look of a fedora but dont think it works for me. i wouldnt mind getting another possibly an akubra. but dont know if i would wear it enough to justify spending over a 100 bucks on a hat. more of a ball cap man myself (and of course its an indy ball cap)

I wear a fedora almost everyday. There are days were I don't, but I would have to say that I wear a fedora about five to six days out of the week.

Am wearing mine right now. Everyone has left the office and I am just checking some things. Hat actually cuts the glare from the fluorescent lights overhead.

I wear mine almost everyday.

I've always thought that wearing a fedora is a lost art, along with other "gentlemanly" ways.

So for me it's part of everyday dress, like wearing work place appropriate clothes.

In the winter...sometimes (about 2-3 days a week). In the summer...rarely since its just too stinking hot!

Manu, how long have you had your fedora? I suspect that it takes some consistent wearing every day (and a healthy disregard that other people are NOT wearing one) before it starts to feel like "you".

Do you feel like you've worn it long enough that it's past the time when you thought it was start to be "you"?

ive had one for years. i think it is the fact that very few others wear it that it kindof gives me the self conscious aspect.

Wear one just about every day. In summer, a Panama hat.

Did walk past the Dr Pepper end cap at the grocery store and felt self conscious for a moment.

I don't wear a fedora everyday, but rotated with panamas, western hats, a Tilley, a couple of miscellaneous straw hats, and one of those "crusher" hats that I originally got to stuff in a backpack, I once managed to go 17 days on a jobsite without repeating and without wearing a ball cap. Spent the next 2 months being referred to as "The Hat".

Yeah. Yeah that sounds about right.

Never....

I just can't... I have a beautiful AB from Steve, however I can't afford something to happen to it. I also can't afford a new one at the price increase... I need to get my Keppler reblocked and I would wear that once and a while...

Also, my girlfriend hates the high crown and complains whenever I put it on :D

I had to STOP wearing it due to Indiana Jones 4 ! The comments had died down over the years, but now everyone is into full Indiana Jones "mode"

I used to be way to self-conscious until one day when I was going to class (college campus) and saw a guy that I could only describe as the Emo Caveman. He looked dead on like one of the Geico cavemen, except he had the emo bangs over one eye, he was completely filthy, and he was wearing a giant pair of Lil' Jon sunglasses. I figured if nobody gave him h*ll for looking like that I could get away with anything. And since then I've started wearign it every day.

(It also helps to have a really nice hat. I didn't feel right at all in the uber-high crowned Fed 3, but the 4 feels totally right.)

zues, I've gotten a few recent Indy comments as of late (none derogatory, though) but the funny thing is I get them even when wearing my vintage Dobbs with a C dent and rust coloured ribbon! It's not going to stop me from wearing a hat every day, though. I think it comes down to personal comfort levels and how confident you are in your hat wearing, regardless of the comments. I agree that it'll be real interesting to see what happens next week or so.

I only owned the official hat so I never really wore it. However I have on order a Camptown. What do people normally wear when they wear their hats? I almost always wear jeans and a polo shirt and don't really think a hat will go with it. Will a hat look ok with such an outfit or do I need to start wearing slacks?

I did see an older gentleman on the train wearing a nice hat yesterday, but he was in a suit.

i wear a fedora a few day of the week. and the rest of the time i've got a 8 panel newsboy on. and occasionally a porkpie.

when i wear the fedora (grey with a c crown) i get called Indiana by co-workers and strangers. When i wear the porkpie (grey also) i hear people calling me Abe Lincoln. which stopped after i shaved off the beard. the general public are just not well informed on the subject of hats. don't let them prevent you from wearing what you like.

I wear a fedora pretty much every day, although I don't have an actual Indy hat yet (until my AB arrives!). I've been wearing my Art Fawcett light felt fedora a lot recently. On Wednesday evening I got an Indiana Jones comment about it, albeit in a positive way. The next day someone made a Dick Tracy crack about it. I pointed out that Tracy's hat was yellow. This one is 'natural' and looks nothing like Indy or Tracy. I don't worry about it, and don't poll others about what I should be wearing.

As mentioned above, there are all sorts of freaks in the world who have nothing said to them. I figure wearing a fedora is a fairly mild thing to do.

I had a "nice hat" comment the other day wearing my AB. Didn't even get into "Indy." He asked me if I got it in the Minneapolis area, and said no, unfortunately it was online, as there aren't many "good" hatters locally anymore. He said he agreed too, and had asked because he was looking for a friend for a good fedora.

I've got a gray Fed. III that I've worn everyday since getting it in early January. I have not got any Indy comments, and I have not got any negative comments--but I've received lots of positive comments. I definitely plan on wearing my brown AB most everyday once it arrives! 8)

The question is, when do I NOT? I wear some sort of hat every day, usually a fedora, but not always an Indy fedora. Especially in the summer, when I stick to straw (FL Summits being the exception  ). I've never gotten an overtly negative comment while wearing a fedora, although a couple of very small kids have giggled. Even the dumb remarks haven't really been "negative". The best compliment, though, is when somebody asks where I got my hat. :D

It's funny we can wear hats for years but when the movie comes out we get the comments.

From Dave Letterman's top ten on August 1, 1989. Top Ten New York City Hats.

(Pictured: a man in a fedora)
Number 8: They were all out of Batman hats.
Still cracks me up.

I like to wear mine when I am in the mood for fun, usually some sort of dressing up. I don't wear my fedora too much (that might change with my new one, though), but I have plenty of other hats to make up for it! Sometimes I wear them just for costuming, other times for utility.

A rough estimate for example: brown Magnoli HJ (my new baby!), purple fedora (see icon), old DP, a black bowler, a Madison-Scouts-colored-Dr. Seuss stovepipe, a fold-up outback (for hiking), sweat visors (for summer usually), a green beret (a Christmas hat), an antique Swiss Band hat (for a different costume), a tricorner (from my high school band uniforms) and assorted hilarious winter hats.

I love my hats.

 Wow, I'm impressed. It's unusual (and wonderful) to find a woman with a real passion for hats in such variety. It's very clear you're in it for the fun. I say, have fun every day! That black bowler should cover most situations that the rest of your collection doesn't.

I wear mine pretty much every day with the exception usually being the days I ride the motorcycle to work, which with gas now topping the four dollar a gallon mark is getting to be more and more often unfortunately. I have had my AB for just over a year now and it wasn't until recently that I started hearing any Indy type comments (or Raider's March being belted out) being made by anyone. I've received many nice comments on it since I've gotten it.

Haha, thanks! I think I got it from my mom. She had a bowler because she was a Charlie Chaplin fan; I've never seen her wear it out anywhere, though. (But I got her old one! I actually just used it for an impromptu steampunk getup the other day.) But I remember her telling me that all it took to wear a hat was the confidence. =) If you don't have the confidence, you can't pull it off.

So basically, having fun hats keeps me in a good mood. You can't be too serious with a silly hat! Or too depressed with a good one. E];D

I wear mine just about every day. I hadn't really planned to when I bought it (mine's an Akubra Sydney) but I liked the way it looked so much I ended up wearing it all the time. So far all comments I've gotten have been positive. I'm expecting more Indiana Jones digs in the coming months, but oh well.

I wear a fedora everyday. I've only gotten positive comments when wearing them. Some of the folks I work with are now interested in fedoras, and one has already bought one. No one has mentioned Indiana Jones yet. After a while no one even seems to notice, I guess they just get used to you in a fedora.

I wore mine to the city the other week - looked like raining and it did. All suited up to the max as well. My boss's comment was "Nice fedora - you style master!" which was nice - at least he recognised it for what it was.

We then took a HR lady and candidate to lunch at an old world resturant in Perth called the Melbourne Hotel.

The hat and my dress fitted in perfectly - the concierge even taking our coats and my hat with aplomb!

At the end of lunch the HR lady said that she thought hats looked very smart and dignified and thought there should be more of it.

The hat now goes everywhere with me. :D :D :D

Cheers

I've been wearing Fedoras pretty much constantly since I was 16 (almost 23 years ago....) I always wanted to have that style of hat :D

I know what Zeus means though: Back then when I first wore my hat there were almost always the "Indy" comments as hardly anyone wore hats where I lived. Then hats were suddenly "In" due to Michael Jackson (though you could usually only find people wearing black). For a while after that it was pretty "safe" wearing the "Fed "(actually back then I wore a brown Trilby....d##n you IndyGear ....where were you back then when I needed you  ?!!)

As soon as "The Last Crusade" came out though it was back to being followed almost every step of the way by the "Raiders March"...!
(which was sometimes pretty "cool" but could also really be a bit of a drag...!

The years that followed were probably the best of my life-For me and yes...for my fedora. I'd moved away from Trilby to a very nice Fed and started to travel....It was a WONDERFUL period of my life...America,Europe,Israel,Egypt ,all the way down to the Sudan.... it felt all the more exciting and that much more of an experience with my hat ...Sounds funny doesn't it ...?But I tell you folks..100% true!!!
Everybody loved my hat, everybody could see,I'd been somewhere...that I was going somewhere........(sorry I'm getting all nostalgic!!!!)

Anyway once I got back I felt real comfortable wearing my hat- And even though (like Indy) I no longer have "that" Fedora -my subsequent hats have passed on this "baton" of experiences and memories through to my present one...."It's not the years, Honey, it's the milage!"

As the years went by if people did make any "silly" comments at all it was most likely "Cowboy" ie."Yeehaaa!"..
...but now with Indy IV coming out tomorrow :D :D :D I'm certain I'll just have start getting used to hearing that Ol' "Raiders March" again....To be honest though -I'm almost actually looking forward to it!!

Regards

Prof.
