Indy Hat Sighting

I was at a convention last week at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and noticed a man wearing a brown fedora. He saw me looking at him so I said Hello, I like your hat. He was pretty proud of it so he took it off and showed it to me. He said he had just gotten it and the inside lining was imprinted with a large Indiana Jones logo. I tried to find out where he had gotten it but he was a little vague, and then my wife came along and we had to go.

Any idea what this was?

It was probably one of the Official Indiana Jones hats made by Dorfman Pacific. Legally they are the only people who can put the Indiana Jones name on their hat...I think.

Yes, it was either a current Dorfman Pacific, or one of the older Stetsons that had the license back in the 1980's. Between the two, I'd guess a DP over a Stetson. They can be MANY varieties of DP, from Australian styles, to ones that sometimes can resemble an Indy Fedora... But they'd all typically have the Indiana Jones pin on the ribbon and the name on the headliner or the inside of the hat if there's no headliner.

Here's DP's official site with just some of their IJ offerings:

Is this story correct: http://indianajoneshats.net/about-the-hat.html ?

I was under the impression that the first hat was bought directly from Herbert Johnson's store in London.

So many stories....

I believe they lifted that story verbatim from the HJ/SAB site. I very much wonder if they had permission to do so.... in any case, it seems in poor taste at best to not acknowledge that the original hat was an HJ.

I agree. While they did acknowledge that the hat was called the "Poet", it seems that's as far as they wanted to go. It conveniently leaves the reader to speculate that the hat was made by them. :(

Very poor business eithics if you ask me. But, if they were to make a potential buyer privy to that information they would undoubtably lose their custom. It is all in an effort to make money. Why tell them about HJ and AB; Dorfman doesn't care that they made the film hats, they want to make money off of the film hats.

Yeah, it seems to be a trunkated version of how the Poet ended up on Harrison head. They mention "the hat store" - but not that it was Herbert Johnson. Interesting.

Don't worry, the full (and long!) fedora story will be up on the main page VERY soon..... 8)

I am pretty sure it wasn't the 'poet' version of HJ they used in Raiders... Wasn't it HJ's "Austrailian" model? I think that was mentioned in several threads here as well as at the DVD's making-of documentary...
