Whip Measurements For Each Movie

Post by classicbullwhips »

Hey guys, I like everyone else knows that each whip from each movie has slight difference and measurements, I know a while ago there was a hand drawn picture of the raiders whip measurements but i can seem to find it now, also I was wondering if there are any other spec sheets like that one. It would be nice to have these on hand if someone wants a certain style of movie whip so that one can make each style consistent. James

Hi James,

You aren't going to find measurements of every bullwhip used in all 3 of the films, they don't exist. And as for differences between the whips in each of the films, they are mainly the natural variations that happens from whip to whip due to the nature of whips being hand crafted and made from a natural material.

In fact, many if not most, of the whips used in TOD and LC, were left over from Raiders, and that is why the TOD and LC whips are darker in color. The Natural Tan had darkened over the time between the films as well as being used during them. The differences that are noticed between the 3 films are purely chance of which particular whip happened to the one that was used in most of the scenes in each film.

The specs that are spoken about by the whipmakers on here come from Sergei's notes on the Raiders whip that Mark Allen sold a few years back, and thousands of hours of research, and pausing the films and looking at the shots of the whip frame by frame, and inspecting Morgan whips that were made around the same time period, and any other information they can get.

As for the hand drawn notes that Sergei took, it is pretty easy to find if you do a quick search, or even look 6 pages back and it is the second from the top on the page, and the note page is all the way at the bottom of the post.

Use this as a starting point, but I suggest you spend some time doing your own research to best figure out your version of the Indy style whips. There is no exact answer.

James, Paul is right. Unfortunately we just don’t have the exact measurements for the other bullwhips used the original 3 movies. Sergei was very lucky that Mark Allen agreed to let him document the whip so thoroughly while he owned it. Most owners of screen used bullwhips pay a lot to get them and are very protective of these details. It’s difficult to get them to agree to let anyone handle the whips let alone take specific measurements especially if they think it is so that an exact copy can be made, Which is understandable to an extent.

Creating and exact copy of one of these whips though, even with the measurements we have is a lot more difficult then it sounds. Like with the original bullwhips themselves which varied from whip to whip. The thickness of the leather used varies from hide to hide as dose the stretchiness of the leather and the width of the hand cut sets, which make very difficult factors to control if your looking to recreate and exact replica.

With that said though, The new bullwhip section for Indy gear will be going online soon. It does focus on differences of the bullwhips and made for each of the 4 films and will contain many photos of the screen used bullwhip. The way these pages are shaping up, it will be the most definitive source of information on the Indy bullwhips avalible so you should find very useful in researching the specific versions of the Indy style whips.
