Is there a way to find out of what leather is made my first jacket? I received it today...

Image

I have ordered a goatskin jacket (since it would last longer than a lamb, I think), but the leather is SOoooo supple and lightweight that I wonder "is it realy goat"?

Is there a way to tell (by the weight? color? grain of the leather? something else? Does lambskin smells (at leat a little) like Sheep?

Help me!

It´s hard to tell by pics (in case you post some). But you could make some close up pics of different areas of your jacket. We might tell from the graining of the leather. Goat has a very smooth surface and goat can have a very heavy grain.

you need to show some pictures of the leather up close.
then we can try to find out what it is:wink:

I'm guessing you've got yourself one of the new Wested Goatskins. It is VERY light it feels a lot like lamb. But if you have a lamb you whould be able to tell the difference!

It does have, a slight grain to it if you look closely.

Here's a pic of one... take the colour with a pinch of salt as the flash on my camera seems to do all sorts of weird stuff with the colour.

You can also look at the grain of the leather.

Most goatskin leather will have a pebble look to the grain, where the lamb
will be mostly smooth, with much tinier graining to it as can be seen in
KT's pictures.

Goat also smells a little more...well goaty, out of the package..at least I noticed my G&B goat smells distinctly differently than either my Wested or USWKOTCS did..

Looks too "grainy" to be lamb. My money's on goat.

That looks like goat to me also.

Lamb is smoother, with more vein like grain than pebbled grain.

As a collector of A2 & USN G1 jackets, both original and repro, that has all the pebbles of goatskin. On the face of it, that looks like good hide.

I'd say that's goat too.

Well, sending you a lambskin jacket when you ordered a goat would be a pretty big error. No doubt it's a goat.

By the way, Jones, the whole point of goat is that it is light, soft and supple. It's like lamb minus the weakness factor. Forget the fact that goat is light. My goat is light, fluffy and soft - but it is stronger than J***s. Hard to imagine, but it's tougher than cow. I've fallen over, slid down gravel, been dragged by a horse... the goat doesn't tear or wear; it's the real thing.

Cheers
