I've got to vote that you go ahead and practice with your Strain and delCarpio plenty, no matter what you decide. Both will be extremely well-made, and perfect for practicing with a lot.
The problem with getting a cheaper whip to practice with is that your brain and your muscles will grow and learn with whatever whip(s) you use most. And when you go to take out a different whip, it won't perform in the same way you've gotten used to. And your delCarpio and Strain whips are certainly up to the challenge of being used all the time for practice. In fact, my first whip was a 6' black Strain - I have used (and borderline abused at times) that whip, and it still looks and works GREAT! I'm going to have to take some pictures of it soon to post on COW... it's an excellent example of how a well-made whip has been broken in naturally and will evolve into something that ends up feeling and acting like a natural extension of your own arm.
So anyways, in a nutshell, get a Gus whip if you want a whip made by Gus. But personally, I wouldn't get it if your only reason for wanting one is to have a cheaper whip to practice with. Just my two cents. )

PS: Congratulations on your soon-to-arrive whips! I have no doubt you will love them.

David,
I beat my whips to a pulp, but I always check them, clean them and condition them when needed, and they just keep getting better and better.
Now, if you want to get a cheaper "Beater" whip to use on gravel, cement, wrap around trees, and generally abuse, then yeah. I'd do that.
I've cracked a couple of Bernardo's whips, but never owned one, (though with who he's studied with, and quality work and materials that goes into them, I know it's the same,) but my 8' Strain was really my first NICE whip. I cracked that thing on sand, in the snow and ice, sometimes in the rain, (always letting it dry and then using a little conditioner on it,) in dirt and mud, grit from horse rings...etc. etc. etc. I cracked it fairly hard as well.
But, I always cleaned it. If I'd been out somewhere cracking in mud or sand, I spent about 5-7 minutes with some saddle soap, a soft rag, and a soft toothbrush, scrubbing the grit from the braid. If it got wet, it hung up until it dried, and then I'd use just a LITTLE Leather conditioner on it to moisturize.
It STILL rolls out straight as an arrow and smooth and pretty. I traded it to Gery Deer, and he uses it for target cutting and it is the ONLY whip he does wraps on his performance partner, (his wife, Barbara,) with. I recently, sorta jokingly asked Gery if he'd ever consider trading it back to me. He said "NO!!!!" (which is fine! I get to crack it when I see him. Watching him work with it is amazing, and he uses it to wow bigger audiences than mine. So, it's doing quite well.)
Seriously, the worst thing you can do with a good whip is NOT use it.

Lauren and Dan,
You both make excellant points....
Dan, you know my other love, swords...... its the same there... no need in getting a really fine quality blade and NOT using it...
NOT using is the same as abusing!
I think my other motivation for getting a "cheaper" whip is to get something SOONER!
the 6 week (del caprio) ands 8 week (strain) wait period is going to feel like an eternity! )
Im just eager to get to crackin...
