Aniline Dyes...

I bought a Wested vegetable tanned lamb a few months back and had hopes of darkening the color through using Pecard's colored dressings like another member here had done to his, but after a few attempts of using both black and brown Pecards I still haven't been able to get it to a desirable shade of dark brown.
Has anyone ever tried Aniline Dyes before? Obviously I don't want to destroy my Wested, so if any of you leather gear heads know this to be a big no-no, please let me know.
