Fed IV and Adventurer: Side By Side

Post by Luke Warmwater »

Got my Fed IV (reg) today. Here it is with my Adventurer (click for larger image):

Image

I sat on the Fed a couple of times and put an initial bash into it; keep in mind that my Adventurer has had much more love and attention.

Initial impressions:
F4 taller by nearly 3/4 inch
F4 ribbon contrasts more with the hat body. Still could be darker.
F4 overall darker than the AkAd. This could be a function of the love my AkAd has gotten.
F4 very soft out of the box and easy to shape. The AkAd was much tougher and required jumping into the Potomac River with it to get the look I wanted. Will the Fed is undoubtetly the more SA, I think the AkAd is the tougher of the two.

No doubt I'll come up with more stuff later.

Questions, comments, insults?

I love your hat stands! Did you make 'em yourself? What are the hats sitting on?

Wow, I gotta make a couple of these.....

Oh, and nice hats....

The hat stands are just dowels in between two wooden disks I got at Michaels Crafts. They normally hold two of my Star Wars helmets.

***DISCLAIMER*** I know it is not a SA Indy hat********

Having said that....I like the Adventurer! It looks to be the same color as the Fed... You say the Fed is darker though?

Yes, just a shade. It is fresh out of the box, though. I've worn the AkAd every day for two months now.

The Mrs. likes the AkAd better on me. I'm in a quandary.

The FedIV looks like a real Indy to me. The AkAd... naaaah. Personal preference of course but the AkAd just doesn't work for me.

I like the look of the adventurer just not the color of the band. It looks like the color of the dp wool hats

Well, the Fed4 wins. I sold the AkAd to a buddy. After I sit on the Fed a few more times and take it in the river, kick it around the rocks, it will have the character of the old hat.

Are these hats the same size, and if they are, do they fit the same?

They are the same size. The Fed was a wee bit looser, but not by much.

Now that I've seen them side-by-side, I agree. It does need to be darker. I think the Fed's could be darker still.

Luke,

Did you trim the brim on your AkAd? I trimmed mine by 1/4 inch all around and it totally changed the look of the hat.

I agree with Marc. I like the Adventurer, but not for me. It does have a unique look to it. I think the Adventurer is more of like a cartoon version of an Indy fedora, if that makes sense. The Federation definately takes the cake.

I agree, my two boys have got Feds and they look great on and when I compare them side by side with my AkAd, you can really tell the difference (and now I have to justify to my better half why I need to get another hat!!!)

No. Not quite up for hat alterations yet.

Apologies in advance, but I like the Fed, what a great looking hat. I can live without the Adventurer...there's just an unlikeability to it, IMO.

With a smaller brim it definitely improves the "likeability" factor. I still wish there was more contrast in the hat/ribbon colours and that the ribbon was darker :) That said, after some dusty bush work my AkAd has definitely lightened up somewhat.

Sometimes that big ol' brim comes in handy. Like when driving East on your morning commute.
