New Guy - New Gear

Post by Switch625 »

Hi everybody. I've been lurking for awhile, soaking up all the excellent information here and I just got my account activated. The result is this: my "close enough" Indy costume. It's far from finished. Unfortunately, my car needed new tires and that soaked up all the budget for my Indy costume.

Here's a quick breakdown:

- Safari shirt (stone color) from Cabela's
- plain ol' pleated khakis from Wal-Mart
- "close enough" whip from eBay
- "close enough" Eddie Bauer shoes from eBay
- "close enough" bag, gun belt, holster and whip holder from Costumebase, also from eBay

The only difference between the two photos is the hat. The hat in the first picture is some hat I found at a costume shop 7 years ago for $20. I rebashed it to more closely resemble a generic Indy fedora. The hat in the second photo is one of those officially licensed fedoras that I rebashed just like I did the other. Hat #1 is a little too small, hat #2 is, naturally, a little too big. They both have some taper, but #1 doesn't have much. I've been trying to shrink hat #2 but I'm still not happy with the results. I've been fooling with it so much that the color's fading. I'm currently saving up for a Federation IV.

Feedback is appreciated, but again, this is not supposed to be anywhere close to screen accurate. I just don't have the cash to pull that off at this time.

Next I'm going to replace the hat ribbon, bag strap and holster with Todd's products. I'll get the leather jacket from him too. I've got a toy gun that I'll use but I'll eventually upgrade to one of those Airsoft guns. I still need to weather everything too.

Everything looks great! And don't be ashamed of "close enoughs" because that's all I have and trust me, if you can pull it off it feels great to have something unique. Oh, and that whip looks exactly like mine, was it from a seller named jrzjoe?

Yes it was. It's a good whip, I like it a lot and the price was good. Can't beat that! Thanks for the compliment!

Good looking gear. Most of my stuff is close enough too. Very few people outside COW would know the difference anyway.

Well said! In my opinion, it's all about the "Indy look" and if you put your gear on and someone says "hey, you look like Indy!" then I say mission accomplished.

Lookin' good! I quite like those boots.

Close enough counts for sure, man. Don't let anyone ever tell you any different.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the positive feedback!

I was really lucky with the boots - $20 on eBay! I couldn't imagine spending more than that - although I was really, really tempted by those Rockports.

That's right. Sable and I could be related, but as it stands, we're not, and that's close enough for me. Actually, I live in Maryland, and he lives in Canada. THAT'S close enough for me!

Switch, your gear looks great and you look equally happy in it. What else matters?
