Which leather gives you the most grief?

Ok, here's a weird question. What leather do you get the most grief about? Today I had one of my students give me grief because my Wested was made of Horse hide...only slightly more grief then when she found out about my Todds lamb. She was freakin' on me until I pointed out that she was wearing leather boots...deer to be exact.

Just lookin to hear some stories if there out there

PETA Hippies!! People Eating Tasty Animals!

Just remind these poor souls of the fact that without animal products such as meat and hides, mankind would have most probably died off of starvation and exposure hundreds of thousands of years ago!

Everyone has a choice, and we choose to wear hide. She doesn't want to, she doesn't have to.

Lambskin is undoubtedly a by-product of lambs used for the food industry...Had a good Giro lately? At least it hasn't gone to waste...

I used to get grief from my fiance's sister, who is, as best as I can tell,
a part time vegitarian. Why part time? Because she eats fish, turkey, and
chicken...go figure.

Anyway, she was on me one day about my Aero Redskin B-3 that I wore
to her house one winter.

She said it was "cruel" to wear a jacket made from a living thing.

And, as I am not one to pass up a good situation that will cause conflict,
I had to set her straight, and tell her that my jacket was NOT made from
one animal.

No, indeed, in order for me to be wearing this beautiful jacket, THREE
animals had to give up their lives in order to make it!! A sheep, a horse,
and a cow!! (Sheepskin for the body of the jacket, horsehide outer
sleeve panels, and cowhide adjusting belts on the sides and collar).

She got so upset, she almost blew that nice vein in her forehead!!

I had to remind her that at the time, she was also wearing leather
sneakers, and that she was just as bad as I was, unless she got rid of
all of her leather goods, such as her purse collection, her shoes, watch
band, and various other leather items.

Oh, and her new car also. That has a leather interior. That has to go
also.

Once I pointed these things out, and that she was just as bad as me,
she has since left me alone when we go over to her house to visit.

It's pretty funny when you get this sort of attitude!

I'm one of those crazy vegetarians, but I seriously couldn't care less if you eat meat or wear leather goods or whatever.

There's nothing worse than someone preaching at you or moralising. I'm sorry you guys have had someone on your leather clad backs about it!

I'm vegetarian and happily wear my Wested or my AB or my Aldens... big whoopee-do. Get over it you hippies!

Now you're getting nasty.

Dunno...it's a lot of leather, to be sure. I'd be interested to learn how ethical the leather suppliers are. The older I get the more socially conscious I tend to be.

Just point out to all those giving you grief that you are wearing all natural, renewable resource, biodegradable clothing and that the nylon/poly viscose clothing they are wearing are petroleum based products that will sit in landfills for millennia.

Then watch the light go on. It's pretty funny actually.

Maybe. There's plenty of good and valid reasons for vegitarianism without resorting to morality issues (and specifically preaching them.) Living things eat other living things... it is the nature of things. I've never understood why some people think that human beings are somehow removed from the food chain.

That said... I'm all for the naked thing.

Funniest arguement was a vegitarian, giving me grief about the leather, and that her polartec fleece was eco friendly.. Till I pointed out it was a petrolum by product, from plastics and that she contributed more to global warming, and that at least leather was a natural renewable animal by product.

I grew up raising cows. On the rare occasions that they cared to speak, many of them commented that being turned into fashionable leather goods was the fulfillment of a higher calling of sorts. It was something that many teenage cows aspire to but rarely achieve. The rest of the time they mostly just blather on about theoretical physics.

I can only assume the same is true for horses, goats, and sheep. Living in Kentucky, most of the horses i encounter are too self absorbed to offer much in the way of authentic conversation.

All of this is, of course very upsetting to the chickens. Not sure why.

I find pigs are the easiest to talk to, very down to earth and generally quite wise. Just don't let the ducks see you.

I think I have posted this before...but, here goes. A few years ago, a lady stopped me in a hotel, where I was leaving after a business meeting, and started in on my about my HH Wested jacket! I stood there quite patientently listening to her ramble on and on about animal rights, etc...and, when she stopped I just looked her in the eyes and asked: "What! Are you telling me you don't believe in recycling?" This shut her up and she stormed off in a huff! I was surprised she didn't go after me for my hat, as well  ! W>

you should of just told her that your human skin jacket can't be worn in public.....plus you're looking for one last perfect hide for the remaining arm panel......

.....she puts the lotion on or she gets the hose again...........

I don't mind when peopel have a go at me over a leather jacket. It's their right in a democracy. They certainly have a point in my opinion. I don't have to wear leather. But I choose to. I do not believe it helps to be patronising or rude back to someone with a different position.

And just remember this, every animal has enough brains in it's skull to tan its own hide. In case you ever want to try your skill at brain tanning your own leather. It's a tough process but well worth the effort.
Now normally, I don't look friendly enough for people to approach me about wearing animal hides or being a carnivore. Besides most folks I know wear some sort of leather, even the vegans, it's very hard to escape.

Cheers!

My boss is a vegan. He gave us this great book to read about how animals are penned up and the nasty things they do to each other in those pens. Did you know pigs will start to eat each other in a confined cage and chickens will peck each other to death for space. But the chicken farmers are smart fellows; they burn the beeks of the young female chicks. The male chicks get thrown into a big bag and suffocate from the weight of other chicks. I tell you all this because he is from Tennese and has no problem wearing leather or putting rounds down range in Iraq or Afghan. I have had a few people look at me strange and wide eyed when I tell them my jackets are made from goat, lamb or especially horse  . Like we are killing them ourselves and using only the hides and leaving the rest on the range.

Actually, even vegetarians and vegans need to kill animals to eat and stay alive. Every year, farmers kill millions of rats, mice, and other vermin around grain silos, fruit orchards, and cornfields. If they didn't, plagues of those vermin would decimate all of our crops, and we would all starve. Even if we don't kill the animal ourselves, by purchasing and eating any fruit, vegetable, or grain product produced commercially or privately in the USA (or any other country), we have supported the killing of animals. It's the only way we could possibly stay alive.

And according to Andrew Zimmer those vermin are delicious. :D "If it looks good, eat it!"

Cheers!

Since this is a forum about jackets and I have already made my opinion felt on this issue I feel I need not elaborate. As the moderator stated, this subject could just provoke unwanted and unwelcome hostility, so if you don't mind I will say no more on the issue. There is plenty of information on the leather debate on the internet - and not all of it by wacky fanatics...

Actually today was funny IMO, a few of students wanted to try on the indy jacket so I said sure if you get your work done and the kitchen cleaned. They did, so I grabbed the jacket and handed it to them, they commented on how heavy it was and I stated it was horse hide, well two of them backed away  and said no thanks that's gross :? :?

No problems. Not sensitive at all. Just trying to keep the peace. I really like this site and don't want to get bogged down in silly stuff. A pocket flap around here can sometimes set off a war... Mind you, most times people here are pretty cool.

My only hostility is to the genius horse/animal lovers who pushed for the closing of slaughterhouses in the US.

Now instead of controlling the process, horses are transported long distances in trains to Mexico and Canada, then killed, and brought back to the US for tanning.

Many of them are having second thoughts after realizing their mistake, which can be read by threads at forums here:

http://www.horse-protection.org

These people are so clueless sometimes its funny.
