Is Saddle Soap a Must? Or Is Pecards Enough?

When cleaning a bullwhip, I'm rather curious if we must absolutely use saddle soap before using Pecards? Or will Pecards be enough to clean a bullwhip without any saddle soap needed? Also, how often do you recommend cleaning a bullwhip assuming it is only practiced on weekends? After every session, or every month? Thanks!

Pecards is just a leather conditioner, not a cleaner. You don’t have to use saddle soap though; in fact if you’re just cracking your whips in your yard out on the grassy lawn your whips probably don’t need it. In these cases as just wiping your whip down really well with a soft lint free cloth after most practices is just fine to keep them clean. You can also dampen the cloth slightly if needed to help get off any stubborn dirt. If you want to clean them with Saddle soap, usually once or twice a year is fine as long as your keeping them maintained. I usually only use saddle soap on whips that get really dirty or if the seem to be in need of a really good cleaning.
