Fed IV reg, or wait for my Magnoli HJ?

Post by Venkman »

Evening gang!

I love the pics of the Fed Im seeing, and although I absolutely love my Akubra, Id really like something a little more SA, and you can never have too many hats (well, that Barthomelew Cubbins guy maybe).

I do have a Magnoli HJ I ordered the first week of April, which I bet will fit the bill, but I have no idea how long that will take to arrive. If I understand correctly, those go out to Steve for tweaking, and Im not sure how those fit in with the regular AB schedules.

I guess I would kind of like to see the HJ before I decide to go for the Fed, which doesnt look like they are going to have any in my size anyway until May 10th. Any insight as to the wait times for the Poets these days?

Just pondering..

Venk

I think the new fed IV is probably more accurate than the HJ.

Interesting.

More accurate in what respect?

In terms of appearance, the Magnoli HJ is as accurate as any AB. So, regardless of your opinion about AB accuracy, that's what you've got. The felt is rabbit, and much softer than an AB or a Federation.

Now, in terms of durability, I can't say for sure. But I have a hunch that the Federation will outlast the HJ. Personally, having owned several Federations over the years and a Magnoli HJ... the Fed is the better hat dollar-for-dollar. The Mag HJ is a hat for completists and HJ fans.

but if the federation is open crown then really the determining factor would be your hat bashing abilities and how sa you can make the crown and the brim. :-k

Hey there Venkman,

I bought both the Magnoli HJ AND the Fed IV and have since received them both. Now, I MAY have had a special circumstance with my Mag HJ, as it seemed too short-crowned and tapered a bit (not so much from the front, but definitely when looking from the sides). So, I was not very pleased with the look, as you might imagine. Steve and Magnoli were kind enough to allow me to send it back to Steve and have him look at it/see what he can do. I JUST now received my Fed IV. Here is my take on both hats if you take the problem with my HJ out of the equation (assuming it was a problem with only that one - if not, then I'd definitely recommend the Fed).

The felt of the Magnoli HJ is MUCH more malleable, most likely due to the fact that it has significantly less stiffener in it. Even considering this, however, the felt is EXTREMELY soft. It's wonderful, even. =) The felt is spot on, and it really FEELS like the Indy hat. The brim is also much more Raiders-esque in that it doesn't snap, and is quite floppy (but not so much that it would loose its shape). Had the crown been straighter and higher on the Magnoli HJ, I'd say go with that one hands down. HOWEVER, all that said, in reference to an early reply, I'd have to say the new Fed is MORE SA than the Magnoli (especially the one I received). I will be posting pics on the Fed IV display thread in a moment, but it LOOKS like the Raiders hat. Akubra nailed it better than pretty much any hat I've seen thus far (I've not held/owned an AB =( BUT, even then - the AB LOOKS like beaver felt - LOVE it, but there's definitely a difference between an AB Raiders and a well-crafted rabbit-fur Raiders). If I were to buy an AB, it would be for the CS look, for obvious reasons, though it holds the Raiders look AMAZINGLY! But the new Fed is just spot on. I can't sing it enough praise! But, like I said, provided the Magnoli HJ you get is all the right proportions, that is a FANTASTIC hat and feels soooo smooth - almost sensual. haha. My personal plan is, once I get the HJ back from Steve, that will most likely be my LC hat (unless of course, he's TOTALLY re-hauled it to be the perfect Raiders hat), and my Fed IV is my Raiders hat.

Sorry about the length of that, but hopefully it helps! Good luck in your decision!!!!

Hey imagine671, great to hear you've got a hat you're thrilled with after the disappointment with your Magnoli HJ.

Hopefully that one still works out for you. Those of us that ended up with a great Raiders hat from Magnoli are keeping our fingers crossed for you.

Have there been any comparisons between the Fed IV and the previous Fed Dlx?

The Magnoli HJ will be blocked on a AB block by Steve and have the vintage HJ ribbion of Steve ( I could be wrong on the ribbion you would have to ask Magnoli of Steve) even if it's not the ribbion will be better than the fed. If you are half way decent at bashing a hat it will be very SA.
The new fed. looks great but the block won't be as close as the one being used on the HJ. I agree that it will be tougher no doupt than the felt that HJ uses but it's a factory hat and the HJ is going to be hand made by Steve. I think just at a price stand point the fed is more bang for the buck.

Heya Tron,

Yeah...thanks for that. It is nice to be happy about the new Fed. And let me qualify my other comments about the Magnoli again, if I may. That hat is FANTASTIC. My issues were just that...MY issues. The other Magnoli HJ's I've seen on here have looked superb! VERY SA! I only recall one other occasion (and I may have referenced it in my original HJ thread) that someone received an HJ that was the wrong height (and that may not have even been a Magnoli). Upon receiving the Fed, I'm convinced my decision to send the HJ back to Steve for a re-haul was the right idea, as there was a noticeable difference in the height of the two hats, now that I've seen and held both of them.

Anyway, Venkman, if price is not an object, you cannot go wrong with the HJ, but you'll also be QUITE pleased with the new Fed IV, if you go that route, and the price is SO right considering the final product. LITERALLY a flip of the coin on this decision! =)

Oak, the Mag HJ does indeed have the vintage HJ ribbion.

UPDATE on Magnoli HJ:

I received the Magnoli HJ today in the mail after Steve re-worked it, and let me say, it looks FANTASTIC. He TOTALLY fixed my hat! Though, it was COMPLETELY smashed in the mail - no fault to Steve - he packed the hat as best as it could be. It looked like a pancake when it came out of the box. I popped it out, steamed it into an open crown (with some hand-blocking), and it responded EXTREMELY well. Went right back to the shape Steve put it in. I then let if set and finally rebashed it in the Raiders style. The ability of this hat to bounce back from the abuse it received is testament to its quality, I say. And it feels SOO nice. I've said it before. When it comes down to it...there's really no comparison between the feel of the felt on the Magnoli HJ and on the regular Fed. That might have a lot to do with the fact that there is so much more stiffener in the Fed, but the Mag is so soft! =) In any case, I'm extremely happy with both, and I say, if you can afford it - get both!! =) I'll post pics of the Mag HJ as soon as I get home from work/university.
