When are we going to properly compare the jackets?

Post by PLATON »

We read many posts like "Here's my new Wested" or "Just received my new FS" and we enjoy photos of people wearing them, or not.

In the past we have talked many times about the length of the film jacket in comparison with what vendors sell today. I was also disputing that the 80s fit is correct. We know that the FS was made based on measurements of a film used jacket. Many times I asked how 80s fit wested compares to FS of the same size. Silence was the answer.

So here I am again, asking the people who own both FS and Wested, or even better FS Wested and Todd's to give us measurements of same size jacket so that we understand what is going on. Not only SAwise but how the jacket will look on each of us when worn.

Kindly requesting owners of same size jackets from different vendors to provide following measurements

Armpit to Armpit
Shoulder to shoulder
Sleeve length
Shoulder length
Back length
Storm flap length

I think it will clear the picture and will help many of us, because the next possible way to find out is buying jackets from all 3 vendors which many of us can't afford.

Thanks, regards,

How about adding armpit to bottom of the jacket? It's a measurement I find pretty interesting since it will tell if FS, G&B and Todd's are more like Wested 80's or regular fit.

Best regards

If they're custom jackets, then it'll be difficult to make much sense out of it. Combine that with body type and size, and you'll get just as many varied answers as there are posts about any given jacket. If you're talking off the rack sizing, then that's different, but you'll still get varied answers since two different people who wear a regular 40 may look vastly different in the same jacket. I still think the best thing to do is to get measured (or measure a jacket that fits you right) and do the homework with vendors regarding the measurements you're looking for, and go with a jacket that looks right on you.

That's a good one too.

I am talking of the rack, of course. It's not possible with custom.

Even what you say binkmeisterRick is right, those measurements will still provide a good reference. A starting point. I already own a jacket and will be able to compare the measurements with my jacket.

So I will know what to order next.

Then you best decide what size you're wanting to compare to, as all jacket sizes will have completely different measurements.

State a size you're looking to compare to, PLATON, and go from there.

Specs from my size L Wings (comparible to a 44) off the rack isn't going to do you a bit of good if you wear a size 40.

Yes, with USWings going S-M-L-XL-XXL, others using the 38-40-42-44 and so on measurements, and throw in custom jobs, it's almost trying to compare apples to oranges.

The only "real" comparision I think you could do is get the actual jackets from the Archives.... one Raiders, one ToD, one LC, and one CS, and measure them all. But again, with Harrison's jackets being a little bigger in LC and most likely CS, even that probably wouldn't work either, even if they did have all 4 hero jackets for us to look at.

Kindly requesting owners of same size jackets from different vendors to provide following measurements

Armpit to Armpit
Shoulder to shoulder
Sleeve length
Shoulder length
Back length
Storm flap length
You can get this info right from Wested's website. I don't know about the
other vendors.

Other than that, your best source of info is from the people who make
the jackets. Why not ask them?

Since most jackets here are custom jobs, as stated before, it will be almost impossible
to get any accurate measurements, and compare them to a jacket that
is off the rack.

No two people have the same body, arms, chest, waist, ext, so there
are alot of people here who opt for a custom jacket, even if its just a
change in the sleeve length.

Then, throw in the fact that most vendors make short, regular and tall
sizes for each tagged jacket size, and what you are looking for gets even
worse!!

For off the rack sizing, ask the vendors to e-mail you their measurements
if they will. Then you can compare them to each other, for any given
size that you want.

Other than that, if we compiled every jacket measurement, from every
persons jacket(s), in short, regular, tall, custom, Raiders style, TOD, LC,
KS, Expedition, Wings, ext, you are talking litterally thousands of
measurements!!

I'll try and get some measurements out this week for comparison. I already have the Expedition and Wested standard measurements out in my earlier post. Once I receive my Todd's back from the tailor (I'm having a full cotton lining installed), I'll get those measurements out.

I have the following:

Expedition: size 40
Wested Standard OTR: 42
Todds: Large
Wested Custom: 42 "80s" fit.

Just going off hand based on my personal observations, except for the Wested Standard OTR 42, the other 3 jackets all have a similar fit with just nuance differences here and there.
I expected some measurement differences especially if the leather and sewing is all done by hand. Humans are not computer controlled machines so I would hazard a guess that even comparing like sizes within the same vendor might yield different results, if only miniscule.

Vendors dob't bother to ask this kind of questions and it's not in their best interest to answer them.

Once I asked one vendor to give me the measurements of size 38, 40, and 42 so I can choose which one I want.

The answer was "we don't give measurements, you give us yours and we'll tell you which size to get"

That's not how I feel about it.

I wear 40R so if you please guys, and interested in 42 80s fit too. Please let me see some measurements.

Since I already own wested 40R would care to see measurements of FS.

Thanks and all the best

Platon, since you are interested in sizes 40 & 42, I will try and get some pictures of myself wearing them along with posted measurements. I should get my camera back this weekend. That way you can have the measurements along with a visual reference in regards to fit.
I know how it is when trying to figure out the sizing. I'm a 41 inch chest so I always have to figure out which way to go in regards to the 40 or 42. One of the reasons I like COW is the wealth of information that is here.

There's no armpit to armpit.....
Wested uses a standard military fit for their regular jackets. This is
4 inches of movement room above tagged size.

The armpit to armpit is just 4 inches plus whatever the size of the
jacket is, IE a size 42 will have a chest of 46 inches, or 23 inches armpit
to armpit. A size 46 will have a chest of 50 inches, or an armpit to armpit
of 25 inches.

I see they do have most of the other info you are looking for though.

I don't like the "we can't tell you what are measurements are" line.
How in the world are you supposed to make an informed choice if you
can't see what size jacket will fit you?

Its probably Flightsuits that told you that. Their sizes are hard to pin
down sometimes, as some of their jackets are a military fit, some are
relaxed, and some are just huge.
