strand length?

I was wondering how long to cut the strands for a six foot bullwhip?
I heard somewhere, 1 1/3 of the desired length; is there a general rule of thumb regarding the length? How much length, of the strands, will be lost in braiding?

Any help would be wonderful.

Better a little too long than to run out of string :D

I'd go 1 1/2 at least.......

Yes, I go by 1.5x...That works out to spot-on.

That is for Cut & stretched length versus Finished (braided) length....Applies to the shorter strands, too.

Oh... 1.5x after the stretch...
I've been cutting my strands 1.5x before the stretch.
No wonder my strands are allways 2-3 feet too long.

Been wondering why i can barely make a whip out of
two hides... go figure.

Oh... 1.5x after the stretch...
Yeah, I only remembered that because I USED to make leather whips....Now I do nylon...No stretching (or paring, or soaping, or tapering) required....

Think a Kangaroo is in the works in the next year, though.....Just call me a glutton for punishment...

Maybe I should start and try "pre-stretch" while cutting. Should get closer to the right final length right away...

pre-stretch...
I don't mean that try and stretch the hide but string. Cut some - stretch - cut som more - stretch...
