Sit on it?

I have seen threads where people mention sitting on their hats. What is the benefit and should it only be for certain scenes that we try to replicate?
Thanks,
Phil

I think that sitting on the hat is used to achieve a "reverse taper" effect, which must be specific to certain scenes...
...In my case, it was so that I'd learn not to leave my hat unattended at a bar.
Edit: You can see what I mean in this thread, a few posts down:

I believe the sit smash effect is for the SOC bash. Of course if you just want your hat broken in and rugged looking that would work too.

I've sat on my Federation.
I've sat on my Magnoli HJ.
I will not sit on my AB. I know it could take it, but I would expect a slap form Henry Jones Sr. "thats for blasphemy".

I sat on my AB. Broke it in very well. Took the little bite of stiffness out of it.

I beat the @#$% out of mine....crushed it, balled it up. It looks a lot better now, softens up the felt.
Go ahead and sit on it, it wont hurt it.

My first AB had little or no stiffener in it to begin with! No sitting/balling/crushing necessary. It's as floppy as a dishtowel. Ok, slight exaggeration, but you get the idea...
