As a beginner I was wondering if it is possible to construct the belly and core from nylon paracord with a kangaroo overlay...
Looking to save some bucks on the learning curve.

Never considered that, but it sounds possible...Most people are just purists when it comes to that. All nylon or All Roo....but not both.

Nylon's great to hone your skills on a budget, and get some great whips you don't have to worry about getting wet....I'm to the point where I'm pretty confident in trying my hand at a kangaroo whip. I started in leather, but I learned a lot from Nylon.....

I personally think the materials are secondary---What is important is getting the balance and physics right, and working out the little details in the construction. Sure, the materials have some bearing....But not as much as you'd think. Especially between nylon and Kangaroo.

Just my take---Not looking at starting a flame war here.

I think one of the reasons that normally both bellies are made from roo on a roo whip is to use up the strechier parts of the skin instead of throwing them away.

Using the stretchy skin on the wider belly strands gives them more strenght than the thinner strands. Even when cut wider to compensate for the stretch.

If you try to get two overlays from one hide, the one cut from the outer part of the hide will be full of the stretchy hide...and something you need to keep in mind when cutting or your strands will end up very wavy and not very strong.

The overlay when cut from the "center" of the hide will have strongest and most even hide.

That's the conclusion that I've come to...I could be wrong.
