Has anyone ever taken just a pair of Indy esque pants - lets say hypothetically they're made of cotton - and dyed them the right color?
What color RIT dye would you use (or combo of) to make them the same color as Indy's?
Just a thought

I just tried dying pants last night.
I had an old pair of Docker's Premium chinos with decent rear pocket flaps that I thought would work well. They were a very light tan which seemed promising.
Once I got the Rit tan dye home and read the instructions inside the box I noticed that they do not recommend using it on 100% Polyester - which my pants were. Oh well, I figured I would try anyway.
I used the washer and set a timer so that I could re-start the wash cycle before it drained the water. I think I let them soak for about 48 minutes. Then washed as directed and dried them.
I did change the color of the pants, but not as much as I wanted to. The pockets and labels are now a darker tan, but the pants are still a light tan - just slightly darker than the background of this site. Although it did cure a slight greenish tint that they had.
I don't know if I might try again with two packages of dye, or possibly trying the cocoa brown since the difference between the expected color and the result are about the same as between cocoa brown and tan. I don't wear the pants much any more, so all I have to lose is the price of boxes of Rit.
I might also try another pair of 100% cotton pants, even though they don't have the correct type of pocket flaps.

I tried it once I believe the color was black pearl or opal and they came out pretty well. The pants were french surplus with a button fly I only paid 4.00 so it was a cheap experiment all in all I would still rather wait and get better pants
good luck -george
