2008 British Whip Cracking Convention

Post by English Whip Maker »

Hello Folks

Just putting my head round the door to post a quick note about this year's Whip Cracking Convention.

It's on Saturday 5th July at Aldersley Leisure Village, wolverhampton.

More details at http://www.ukwhipconvention.com. The site is a bit of a work in progress, I think, but venue details etc are there.

It would be great to see one or two folk from this forum!

As usual, the day will be a mix of doing your own thing, the occasional workshop, and some informal competitions. It's a very relaxed, family-friendly day out. An opportunity to make new firends, have fun, show off, learn new stuff and, maybe, pick up a new whip.

Sponsors this year, include:

Yours Truly (English Whips) - http://www.whipstore.com
David King - Coyote Whips - http://www.coyotewhips.com

If you're an up and coming whip maker, looking to for a new market, or you just want to support the development of whip cracking in the UK, we'd love to hear from you.

Sponsors get a listing on the Convention website for at least a year, as well as the opportunity to get their whips seen 'in the flesh' at the convention, and we encourage you to send as much publicity material as you can, for people to take away. We'll also make sure that you're listed, with a link to your site, in posts we make in whip forums and on any leaflets we produce. A lot of previous sponsors have reported a number of sales as a direct result of people seeing their whips on the day; and have repeated their sponsorship the following year.

And, of course, any other help is welcome. We particularly would love to hear from anyone who can offer a helping hand on the day - an hour on the door, or help with getting the place ready or clearing away - all offers gratefully received.

OK that's it from me. Hope you're all having a good Easter. Looking forward to seeing some of you there!

I think it's a great idea - that up and coming whipmakers give a whip or two to a convention, plus promotional material. The whip can be used as a prize for a competitor at the meeting (I'm guessing this is what is intended). The whipmaker's work gets appraised by a discerning audience overseas, and widens the potential market for that maker.

The main thing I'm working on now in my making is getting reliable straight seams in my thong plaiting. Once that is sorted out I think I'll be ready to promote my stuff. I sometimes wonder though if the market can support any more makers of Indy whips - the area I want to specialise in (part time). There are a lot of makers who display their new whips on COW. Is there enough demand for more makers would you say?
