US Wings Leather Quandary - Help?

Does anyone know what type of leather this is for sure? I have it listed in the Bazaar, but I'm not 100% sure what it is. It is alot heavier than my Wested Lamb, so I was thinking Cowhide or Goat?

Man, bummer about that back panel! I'm not sure what that is exactly, the grain looks like it could be goat, but goatskin is not all that much heavier than lamb, at least mine is not. Here's a pic of my very well worn Wings goatskin jacket, for comparison.

I hope this helps. My wife bought it for me in 04', US made.

I googled the serial number, all it came up with was a US Wings Horsehide A2?

If you googled the 30-1415 number, I don't think that will tell you very much: I have the same number in my jacket, and it sure isn't a horsehide A2! Goatskin has alot of pebbleing (is that a word?) in the grain. Can you give us more of a close up, or a macro shot? Also, if you could nail down the year it was made, that could help.

Well, it is definitely pebbled, that's for sure, and it says something about being an "Authentic 'Old Leather Flight Jacket'". Maybe an Antiqued Goatskin or Cowhide?

I don't think they ever had an "antiqued" goatskin, but I could be wrong. Still, the hide looks very much like gpatskin from what I can see.

I believe that is their antique "lamb", it's the New Zealand sourced skin that technically too old to be called lamb but that's what is is marketed as. I suppose "Hogget Skin" just doesn't have the same ring.

It has quite a few fans for durablity, but it can be a bit pebbly for some.

Your jacket looks just like the US Wings Antique Lambskin I sold off about a month ago. The tags, lining and leather look exactly like it.
Hope that helps.

Hmm, that may very well be it...it is pretty heavy compared to my Auth Lamb Wested, which is why I was wary of calling it lambskin, but I suppose that's really only the logical choice. Thanks, guys!

It has a seam down the middle, so it's not 100% SA.

That back panel is probably the main reason that their jacket isn't more popular with Indy fans, especially among the larger sizes. Some US Wings jackets are one piece, some are two.

My Wested lamb does not have grain like that. My Wested Goat does. Both are a couple of years old.

I ordered a special edition Indy Jacket a few weeks ago and didn't notice a seam going down the middle of the back panel in their pictures. That's something I don't want. Has anyone else ordered an Indy jacket from US Wings recently that has a seam down the middle of the back panel?

okay, I need to correct my last reply, it is the US Wings Limited edition, not special edition, and they told me the only seam on the back of the jacket is on the back of the shoulders. No center seam down the middle of the back panel. Needless to say I was relieved.

I'm pretty sure it's been established via previous discussions that the vertical seam on the back is not the norm, and rather a variation that occurred on some of their imports that they cleared out last Spring.
I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure. So you shouldn't have to worry about it. I don't think any of their current, made-in-USA jackets have that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that it was most prevalent a couple of years ago in larger sizes like XL and XXL, because of hide size or something.

Correct. Most of the lambskin jackets had the seam as they used every piece of lambskin they could get their hands on to make a jacket. Lambskin doesn't come in very large pieces, so it was sectioned in.

I have never owned a cowhide or goatskin from Wings that was sectioned like that in the back.
