Where and when do you wear your gear?

OK, if this has been asked lately, moderators can nix and provide a link to the old discussion. (I really did do a search).
So, where does everyone wear their gear? What parts and when? How much do you wear together without looking obvious?
I understand portions may be worn separately. I often wear my Wested jacket, or the shirts for work. However, I generally don't put it all together until Halloween, costume parties or a girlfriend cons me into it. Even if I wear the hat and shirt alone, with jeans, someone will always yell out, "Hey Indy!"
I often wear my Johnson and Murphy boots because they look great with almost anything.
Just wondering........

I don't have the shirt, pants or boots. I wear my AB and Wester every day I'm not at the firehouse.

I can wear my Wested jacket, shirt and pants with web belt and Aldens and it doesn't scream "Indy". If I was to add the MKVII I would go more casual such as jeans and t-shirt or polo shirt. You add the hat and you've entered potential hostile territory (I don't need to mention the whip or holster do I?)
I admire those who can pull off the complete look in public. I'm not there yet.

I wear the jacket and Aldens almost daily, weather permitting. In the real warm weather the Aldens take a break, or during icy conditions. In the real cold a jacket gets substitued for a heavier coat, though I just got a Wested Horsehide which I am looking forward to wearing in colder temperatures. The rest only for costuming.

I don't wear my lambskin Wested around much because it's too precious. I'd never payed that much for one thing before so am afraid to wear it around. I just hang it on the chair and wear it only occasionally.
I sometimes wear my MKVII with the web strap still on it when I go camping or hiking. It's a pretty practical bag really. But I wore a hole in part the bottom so now I'm worried about taking it out. It's an antique and I hate to damage it anymore. I need to get one of Magnoli's replicas to take places instead.
I don't have much of a hat right now. My DP looks terrible and doesn't fit. I've got a couple other random wool hats that mostly don't fit or just look wrong, so I don't wear a hat anywhere. When I get my Camptown I might wear it around a bit, though. We'll see how brave I am.
My whip is a cheap cowhide one. I don't carry it anywhere. Don't know why I would. I like having it, but I need to get a better one sometime when I'm richer.
None of my L.L. Bean chinos fit me anymore. I just wear jeans, a t-shirt, and my sneakers typically. Sometimes I wear my leather somewhat Indy-ish hiking boots when I go camping.
I've got this dark blue button-up shirt with shoulder epaulettes. It's not extremely accurate, but I tend to wear it over a t-shirt a lot when I go places. It's pretty practical as a second layer really. I should put up pics sometime to see if anybody can figure out what brand it is. I think I got it at wal-mart along with a couple others of different colors.
Generally indy gear is more of a fantasy costume thing for me. I love the flavor of it. The adventurous 30s flavor, but generally it's not too practical for daily wear for me, sadly enough.

I wear my gear pretty much everywhere - not all at once, but it all gets some good use. I wear my AB about once every other day and my leather jacket on the days I'm not wearing the AB (I prefer to avoid comparisons, flattering or unflattering).
My close-enough boots (I'm about to buy some Aldens) are worn about every other day, as is my web belt. Unlike the hat and the jacket though, I don't worry about what I'm wearing with them as nobody ever makes the connection.
My Magnoli shirt gets worn maybe once a week - usually unbuttoned with the sleeves rolled up and a t-shirt under it. Same with the pants which I tend to wear either with the shirt or a khaki t-shirt.
Strange though it may seem, other than my IOAB whip, my MK VII is one of my LEAST-used pieces of gear - as a college student, the only thing I'm usually bringing to class is a laptop and the occasional sheet of paper and pen (both of which fit in the laptop bag). But when the MK VII would be useful, I always carry it along.
The IOAB bullwhip I rarely carry - only when I'm on break and intend to use it. I think Argonaut summed it up best when he said "I don't know why I would [carry it anywhere]."
Last is my holster - which hasn't arrived yet, but which I doubt will receive much use, except when I want to travel around in full gear (Indy IV premier, anyone?).
Honestly, for all of you who avoid wearing their gear, I really recommend that you try it out. As long as you don't wear it all at once, you'd be surprised how few Indy comments you get, even with the fedora. I think we tend to overestimate how much people will recognize the gear - remember, we've spent years staring at still shots of the films. Normal people probably haven't seen any of the Indy films any time in the last year. :junior: -M

Thanks for the encouragement. I think when I get my Camptown I might just try it. I need it to get used to my head before the premiere anyways.

People definitely love the gear. I wear all my stuff all the time (just not at the same time). In fact, I rarely go out without at least one piece of Indy gear on (usually the hat or the boots). The full gettup is reserved for special occasions (Halloween, Indy VI release).
Even people that make fun of the hat and call me "Indiana Jones" can't resist it. I can almost guarantee that once they're finished making fun of you, they'll want to try on your hat.

Everyday I have at least one piece of gear on - I wear my wested lambskin everyday and I carry my MKVII bag with me everywhere and I do mean EVERYEHERE - I've had it for 3 years and it's been through it all - love the thing to death!
I can't seem to bring myself to wear the Fedora much - when i do people usually whistle the Indy theme at me - which I like, but don't at the same time.

If you're wearing the hat while wearing the bag and jacket, they're definitely going to make the connection. Try wearing the hat while leaving the bag/jacket at home. Also, if you're lacking in confidence, that's going to make the hat seem out of place on your head to others and is going to make them whistle it even more. :junior: -M

Hello there,
I wear my gear almost everyday:
Fedora (akubra) and close enough boots, leather, pans, shirt, and even some time my leather satchel...
The reason why I feel confortable with those is just because they are close enough.
I'm going to have my first goat wested and I'm going to make some hats (one of them will be SA) soon, don't think I'll be able to wear all those at the same time...
No whip, no holster, no bazooka.

I wear my Wested lambskin every day (trying to distress it naturally
) and I've ordered the new Fed Deluxe IV. Like others, I suspect when I pluck up the courage to wear the hat I'll leave the Wested at home. I love the feel and spirit of Indy but I don't want to walk around in 'costume' as it were...wearing a slightly out of the ordinary hat in the UK is pretty daring (unless you're at the races and there anything goes!)...

I wear my Wested and AB on the weekends. I can wear my trousers and Aldens to work, but I often wear a suit to work. I would wear my AB, but I don't have a brown suit, yet, but I'm having one made so then I'll be able to wear my AB as well. What I really need is a second AB in black or charcoal. I'll order that eventually.

I wore my Aldens often during the winter months. They are breaken in nicely. My DB ROTLA lambskin as been worn everywhere for the last three years all over Japan. I plan on taking it with me to Iraq just to say it's been there too (yes, I will post photos). The hat is only worn on Halloween because I never liked hats much, even the ones I have to wear in uniform. No bag, whip or holster yet. Wested pants get worn for, odly enough, dressier days.

I'm always wearing my fedora and the rest of my Close Enough Gear. If more people here wore fedora's more often and they would be more common out there- then everyone would feel more comfortable in doing so.
Like I wrote elsewhere - it's ok to dress like a Heroin Addict and a disco-throw back, but you can't wear stuff from the 1930's and 1940's with out flack, there's something wrong. Some laugh because I'm different and strange - I laugh because they're all the same and strange...
Wear your stuff with confidence. If you come off as if that's what a man is SUPPOSED to look like, others will follow your lead.

Really good points - don't know why so many people see being individual as laughable, must be a safety in numbers thing. A lot of my stuff is 'retro'. I've just bought a 1932 Bulova watch which I intend to wear every day. I shall wear my Fedora when it arrives...!

Much of my everyday wear has the Indy influence. My work boots are the old Carolina Husker Electrical Hazards (since discontinued,) and I have a pair of Rockport Farnums on the way. I wear either a web belt or a brown leather belt that’s a dead ringer for a gun belt (even has the metal and leather keeper.) I wear LLBean khakis in various colors both to work and church. I wear my long sleeve safari shirts quite a bit in the winter, and I’m starting buy some short sleeve safaris so I can keep the look in the summer months. I wear my Wested whenever it gets below 72 degrees (whether I need it or not,) and have been wearing my AB out whenever it gets below the 60 degree mark.
Surprisingly the one piece that gets quite a bit of use is my MKVI bag, as I use it to carry my tuner and luthier equipment to rehearsals and performances. I have a WPG MKVII that I take while traveling, but the VI gets weekly use...

Well when you put it that way it does seem pretty insane. Personally, I go for the mountain man look most of the time.
Often confused with the stoner look, something I really don't want to be identified with.
You make an excellent point. I don't understand why it's so silly to wear a fedora. It's just a different style. The world needs to learn to be more accepting of variety and culture. We're so bland and culture-less today. If I saw somebody wearing a fedora it would definitely brighten things up a bit.

You are far too kind and generous with your complements, but thank you regardless. You're no slouch yourself, Swift. Go Retro, Stay Golden.

Alex - I can't write this enough - but the world needs more men of courage who are willing to say "This is what I'm wearing, this is who I am and if you don't like it, I pity you."
I can't imagine what it would be like to want to wear something really badly and not have the courage or the freedom to do so. I think that's what being in prison must feel like. Self Denial isn't always a good thing or very virtuous. There are some behaviors that I think are abhorrent but the rest of society shrugs their shoulders and says "that's a valid choice" but will then take issue with ME because I'm Retro. I don't think so.
Leave the house with your fedora on! Enjoy your life and live it. Watch "Dead Poet's Society" and read
"Walden" by Henry David Thoreau learning about living deep and sucking the marrow out of life - seize the day and the night! Go for it... life today as if it's your last while making plans for a better tomorrow.

We're living in an insane world where what's good enough to wear or what's "in" or what's "out" is dictated by arrogant tools on Madison Ave who appointed fashion fascists who wake up one morning and say "this year, Purple and lavender Clown-Suits in" and will create a whole line using those colors and style... and Vogue or Elle will warp public opinion and demand THAT is what's is what's in, and why you MUST believe it's in, too.
"GQ" and "Details"is almost as for we men - but I think The Retro Revolution is starting to push back and win...

I hope we come to a point very soon where we're all buying fedora's from our favorite vendors that not only embody the spirit of adventure that was inspired by our now 4 favorite films, but will also suit our own taste and color schemes. I know that's what we need in this society since MTV has had a choke hold on the culture for far too long.
We either need to make a stand or just stand out and do what WE want. And we are succeeding - today I saw three men wearing fedoras out-and-about. We need to be more then Gearheads, we need to be and will become trend setters.

Well said. You're reminding how much I really hate how focused the rest of the world is on what is cool right now or what is in fashion. I don't so much hate it because I think our retro fashions are so much cooler, but more because I think it's stupid and impractical to wear something different because what I was wearing before is no longer in fashion. Even if jeans and t-shirts go out of style, I will probably wear something like them for as long as I live. If they make stronger/more comfortable jeans or t-shirts then I'd wear them, but clothing vendors don't seem to care about functionality or comfort anymore.
The other day I went and tried to find a good pair of shoes. It was ridiculous. Every shoe looked atrocious. All I wanted was a simple cloth shoe in a dark color that was comfortable and didn't stand out. But no, everything was trying to be fashionable and trendy. I hate trendy looking clothes. I just wanted something rugged, comfortable, and lightweight.
It frustrated me that I couldn't find anything I was happy with, and it made me feel like I was just too picky. It bothered me that there wasn't something functional and cheap that I could wear. I don't care what's in fashion.

I certainly hope you're right. Clothes shopping has become a nightmare. They don't even seem to make clothes for skinny guys anymore. The only comfortable jeans you can get seem to be engineered for the skater culture with their boxers hanging out. Again, fashion gone to ****.
I still don't know how functional a fedora is, but I know that it at least has some class to it, and I do like them a lot. I just wish that they didn't make it so the only clothing available is what is in fashion. I'm the kind of guy that doesn't like to worry about clothes shopping that much(indy gear being an exception). Mostly I just wanna get something cheap and practical(ha I use that word a lot).
But on the retro-revolution. I'd be incredibly happy if fedoras came back into style. I'll do what I can to make that possible. Many thanks to my fedora-loving allies here for staying the course.

At first I was reluctant to wear more than one piece of the gear at one time but with the encouragement (nay, insistence) of my girlfriend, I wear parts of it regularly. I wear the jacket nearly every day so it can break in and naturally weather. I've worn the hat with it many times and only once has anyone mentioned Indiana Jones, and that was to compliment the look. I've worn the entire outfit (minus the hat and gear) to social events and have received many compliments. When traveling with my girlfriend and her two daughters I have found the bag essential for carrying snacks, water and other anti-snivel items.
Indy is a very stylish character and one need not be afraid of adopting his look. The fashion industry revolves around people mimicking the look of celebrities.
My father never went anywhere without wearing a hat. I think it is every man's duty to wear a fedora and bring back a very classic and masculine piece of mens fashion.

First off...great topic.
I actually wear quite a bit of my gear every day. Between September 1 and April 31, my fedora ( a 5 year old Peters Bros. Custom Raiders) is my constant companion. I switch to a baseball cap in the summer because of the heat. I take my lunch, Ipod, and something to read to work every day in my MKVII. my Wested Raiders lambskin is worn for the same time frame as my fedora. I had had Noel Howard make me a Raiders gunbelt without the whip strap that I wear as a regular belt every day. And Lastly, my beloved Aldens. I wear them EVERY DAY. I just got my fourth pair the other day. I've kept the other 3 pair. I refuse to part with any of them (much to my wife's dismay) I manage a shoe store and sell A LOT of them just because I have them on. It's funny how many women make their husbands try them on once they hear the words "Harrison Ford"!! As for my David Morgan whip, I have actually discovered that cracking it can be a great stress reliever. But I will only "wear" it on Halloween. I can actually wear the hat, jacket, and satchel without getting any "Indiana Jones" comments. Probably because I'm shaped more like Major Eaton than Indy. I wear my gear with pride!!!

Long time lurker, first time poster....
I wear my Aldens pretty much every day, weather permitting. If the weather is REAL wet or icy, I will wear my Redwing Classics from J. Crew. I tend to alternate between my Wested Lamb LC and an old, very worn, A-2 flight jacket. As much as I like the Wested, it is cut a little too snug for layering, and it isn't the warmest jacket in the closet. I just ordered a U.S. Wings Indy in the KOTCS leather, so that might take over daily duty from both of these jackets!
Oh, and as for pants, I have six pairs of the L.L. Bean Chinos in the closet in various shades, with the Vintage Khaki getting the bulk of the wear.
While I have the Webley, the holster and the gunbelt, I think my boss would take a dim view of those coming into the office!!

i wear parts and pieces of my gear every day. I don't have sa pants or shirt but do wear a lot of safari shirts of various colors. I normally wear a mix of various gear inspired by different characters. Like today I'm wearing my Aldens, cargos, a Mutt tshirt, my US wings Indy jacket, a wrist bracer similar to the ones Rick O'Connell wears, and the same Analog hat that Jerry Shepard wore in Eight Below (something I had even before seeing the movie)

I appreciate it! I have been reading this site for years. I have been a low-level Indy Gear Head since I saw Raiders on the big screen for the first time. I lost count of the number of times I watched it on the big screen (50+) and I wore out two video tapes before the DVD came out. I guess Harrison Ford and I have just been aging gracefully together!

Well, not
always... Quick story: When I was a teenager (shortly after Raiders came out), I was working part time on a horsefarm, relocating recycled hay byproduct (i.e. mucking out stalls). I had been there a few weeks, and had noticed an old, 16' blacksnake horsewhip hanging on a peg on the wall. Being the curious sort, I gave it a try. I knew NOTHING about handling a whip, and I unfurled the whip straight out behind me and whipped it forward...
SNAP!! The end of that old blacksnake caught me RIGHT between the shoulder blades, cutting through a heavy canvas shirt and the tee-shirt I was wearing, leaving a four inch gash in my back. After I recovered from my shock, I re-coiled the whip, carefully hung it back up, and went home to get doctored up. I don't know what hurt more...the whip cut, or my Mom's laughter as I explained what happened.

I wear my indygear everyday... The fedora, the jacket, shirts and pants... and the bag... minus whip and the holster of course... My co-workers think it's pretty cool (It's an IT Company) and they are so used to seeing me in the same clothes pretty much everyday, they got pretty desensitized about it. I do get occasional Indy thing from people but most people here (Canada) aren't really kin on making rude remarks and whatnot to your face, so I get occasional giggle here and there from the distance. I mainly wear it because it looks cool, it's comfy and it's functional. I do mix my wardrobe up a little bit with jeans and other shirts and stuff just to spice things up a bit, but other than that my Indygear is pretty much the only thing I wear 5 out of 7 days. Haha I do get occasional "Geez, is that the same shirts you wore yesterday??" from my co-workers though... Kinda hard to explain to them that I have multiple shirts of same design/color...haha... that actually sounds even worse anyway...haha. Anyway, I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing what you love everyday... Have a good one!!

Welcome to the new guys that are long time readers/first time posters!
I usually wear the jacket and fedora to work (weather permitting) daily. In the summer heat and humidity, fur felt fedoras are hot!
So I have a Belloq-style Montecristi Panama I wear usually instead. My Mark VII repro bag is my work "briefcase" for my daily planner and lunch to and from work daily as well. The real Mk VII is reserved for the "full costume" look.
Safari shirts are the norm too usually.
Until I get my Aldens re-soled (I wore 'em out) - they're "full costume only" currently.
So I only wear the "full costume" (gunbelt, whip, bag, holster, etc) usually at Sci-Fi Cons, parades, Indygear functions, movie events, etc.

The world needs MORE people to be defiant against the current trends and style-fascism ("fashion" for short) and commit more acts of literary arson against the "In Today Out Tomorrow" pillars of rampant consumerism that's committing a literal holocaust on the environment and the international labor scene.
If you want to do something and you're not hurting anyone and it's not immoral or illegal - then you should be allowed to do it regardless of what Carson Kressley says (I'm still bitter about that stupid Sean K. episode..) or what some "Miranda Priestly" writes in a pretentious and enormously superficial magazine. If you wake up and say "Today, I want to wear my fedora..." you should do it. If you want to dress like Eliot Ness, Dick Tracy, The Rocketeer (sans jet pack?) or even Indiana Jones... you should. If you have the means to do so, then for the sake of the Retro-Revolution I'm all in favor of that type of conscription.
Wearing a fedora should be as you said, "personal comfort and style." Making the statement with what we wear is just the added bonus.
The proof that I'm correct in my "Radical Vintage Aficionado Extremism" is the post above this one. Minnesota Jones is a far more balanced, down to Earth person... despite having to contend with my shenanigans.

Fisk, I hear you - an eloquent argument. I have no idea who Carson Kressley and "Miranda Priestly" are but they sound a tad prescriptive. I suppose I see style as something worn lightly, a frame of mind, a positive thing. If you're using it as a tool to 'teach people a lesson' then you've turned it into a uniform and 'battle' ensues. In a world lost to the hypnotic worship of labels then that's not necessarily a bad thing but best not to add to the whole brand fascism by making out your brand is better just because it's older. Best to choose what suits (from any era) and carry it with dignity.
I'll admit I'm more windy than Indy when it comes to wearing a fedora but I'll do my best to wear it breezily
Sorry, bit of a rant
No, lively, healthy discussion...

morganswift - We are in total agreement. What you wear should be fun and be what you WANT to wear... not dictated by what some over-educated over-reaching hack says or writes. If you wear something in defiance of the Style-Fascists (Fashion Elite) go for it and so much the better.
I do think that since the mid-60's clothing styles have gone horribly and grotesquely wrong. But that's a rant for another time.
I'm am by no means serious about fellow Retro's or Gearheads being obligated to wear their stuff. I simply want people the freedom to do so with out restraint. I also don't think IndyGear should be the end-all and be-all, but more as a starting point on the path of Vintage Nirvana.

I wear my hat EVERYDAY and EVERYWHERE
I get the "Indiana Jones" Comment from time to time but I just give a smile back because I know they're jealous
I wear my expedition and now my new kangaroo boots when Im dressed casually (Don't like sneakers). I've been considering getting a MKVII as a sidebag (manpurse) for daily use.
The GREAT thing about most of indy's gear is that they are practical items. I wear jeans and regular button downs and all the gear I mentioned work beautifully together. I only buy indy gear that I could actually use outside of costume and that I know would be useful for almost anything. Wear it with pride and wear it with style because you don't care what everyone else thinks, It's about what makes you happy.

I wear my Wested every day when the weather is cool enough to allow me to do so. I wear the pants for dress pants, on occasion. Like tonight I wore them to the School Board meeting. I wear hats all of the time, so my fed just fits into the rotation, even though I am sure my AB will be taking over the majority of the hat wearing when it arrives later this month though. The shirt I just wear with regular clothes. I wear my boots nearly every day as we have a farm and it kind of neccesitates that. I actually carry the whip around our farm at times too because I have trained my goats to run for the barn when they hear me crack it. So a good whip actually has some practicality for me. The MKVII I take nearly everywhere. It makes a great carry-all bag.
