A question about leather.

I figured this would be as good a time as any for a few questions.
For those who make leather whips, a quick question. About how thick, firm, and stretchy of a piece of leather would you recomend to a guy starting out. I have been looking at cow hide. I can get a pretty good sized hide for cheap, and roo is a little pricey for starting out. Right now I'm working with with para-cord, but am looking at moving up to leather.

Also, I have no experience working with leather whips, mostly due to the fact I can't afford one, but I would love to make one myself. Right now I have a para-cord whip under my belt. Do leather whips stretch, or do you want it to be firm?

Thank you,

hat

Thickness is the mainthing you want to look at. My first whip was cow hide and way to thick. Thick cow hide is going to drive you nuts. So be carefull on how thick you get. Roo hide will be a joy to work with.

Thank you guys.

Should if be little stretchy or is it better for very little stretch?

cut your strings over sized then stretch them and take any stretch out of them, then re size them, stretchy strings will give you plaiting that'll go loose after a while....

Thank you, I think I have found a supplier that has some cow hide that's about a 1mm thick and has been stretched and is very firm. I think i may save up a bit and go for it about the time I finnish off a few more para-cord whips.

Thank you again, this place is great.
