Hi all, I realize that natural and saddle tan whips darken with time (and exposure to the elements), I am wondering if darker whips (e.g: whiskey, brandy colored) also do the same?

I have a bullwhip on order, and am not sure if I should go with a Terry Jacka Indy IV whip copy, or a saddle tan, since I'm afraid that if I go with a Jacka copy, it will eventually turn completely black with time, and lose that color. Likewise, I'm considering going with a saddle tan, since I figure it might end up looking like a Jacka with enough time. Any advice?

Yes they will, though the difference tends to be more subtle. If you like that dark brown look of the Jacka Indy whips, go with that. Colors like whiskey brown and brandy will eventually darken to a deep chocolate, but they will never turn true black.

Thanks, that does clarify things a little, although I'm still a little uncertain. Do you suppose that a saddle tan whip would eventually 'age' to resemble a Jacka whip? Or would it need alot of polish to get that look? I really like the look of both saddle tan and the Jacka, and if I could get a whip that would 'grow' from a Raiders' look into a Kingdom look, that would be a dream come true!

While I have seen a few natural tan and saddle tan whips that have gotten pretty dark, I don’t think I’d say they were quite as dark as the whips originally made from whiskey brown or especially brandy kangaroo hide. They always seemed to retain a bit of a tan tint in certain areas, The brown whips on the other hand are consistently dark brown. With that said someone will probably post a picture of old Morgan that now looks almost black
