Well after seeing some pics of Gus's work on here I decided to order a whip from him myself. I actually called Gus up and talked to him for a bit, he is a real nice guy and answered a lot of questions I had. Well after that conversation I decided to order the whip for sure. He told me it would be roughly 3 weeks for me to get the whip (he had quite a few orders at that time) and that was fine with me because I was leaving town in about a week anyway. Well the little over a week goes by and the day before I leave for 2 weeks my whip was delivered . I tore open the package and was pleasantly surprised with how good the whip really looks in person. I took it out for a few test cracks and it is so effortless to crack! I'll most assuredly will be buying another whip from Gus in the future. Its taken about a week to get pictures of the whips (forgot my camera at home) but bought a new one yesterday.

here is a pic of the whip with my two Winrich whips, the brown 10 footer and reddish 12 footer with the cable inside. Both of the Winrich whips are 8 plait and the the one from Gus is a 8 foot 12 plait.

nice i jsut got my whip from gus yesturday as well. Its really a great quick whip for someone whose looking for cairo street brawl I was surprised at first at the scale of the whip compared to my IOAB adam. But after calling Gus he explain the sizing to me, and we both agreed that the IOAB is probably a bit bigger than most whips really are. Having you not mention anything about the size proves that to me too, and shows my perception was a bit off from being used to the IOAB. But after our talk and looking at alot of screen shots, this whip is very raiders. (ive since darkened my knot up a bit with some brown pecards.) Here are some pics of my whip. Not to steel your thread, but hopefully this will help some other people. Great whip VERY well constructed, Gus is a great guy feel very confident about ordering from him, he went above and beyond for me. Highly recommended.

good looking pics! i wasn't to surprised by the sizing having handled several whips by different makers over the years, everyone is a little different. actually if you look at the whips in my picture as the get longer the handle size also increases . i'll take some more pics when i get home the end of next week, i keep having dogs wander through my shots and stuff here, they seem attracted to the whips so i think its time to lock them back up

yea gus basically explained that to me. I was just unaware of how other size whips were, my mind was so set on the scale of an IOAB. But I cant deny how nice this whip is, I was cracking it so smoothly today. You can easily pull it right off your belt, pull back quick and give a nice crack like indy would. I could do something like that so easy with the IOAB.

i ordered my gus a couple weeks ago, should be here soon

And No my that wasnt me, that was FUSION who was giving his brother the whip. We both happened to have an IOAB first though. When i actually saw his post before I was concerned about the scale, and when got mine, i understood what he meant. But i do love the whip!

Those look great. The Satipo pic really shows how accurate the scale is to the film whip. I ordered one a while back and he PMed me to say he'd be finishing it tomorrow or Tuesday, so hopefully it'll arrive this week.

When I received mine, I was overwhelmed.

Not sure I agree with you there, in fact I'd have said the opposite. Molina is a big guy, bigger than Ford. Look at the size of the handle in relation to his face/head.

I agree Pagey...Molina is 6'2 on paper, which means he is really 6'-6'1 in life. And my Caicedo is a little small compared to the Raiders measurements; but not much at all. I am only 5'8 so perhaps the whip seem's more to my scale.
So, where else are we to get a reasonably accurate real whip for $160?
Untill something else surfaces, this ranks up there with the Federation and Todd's standard jacket as the best of it's kind in all of Indydom.

I ordered an 8' 8 plait Indy whip from Gus. I had not heard from him since I ordered it, so I called him last week. He advised that he's been pretty busy, but he should be able to get mine out by the 20th. He also advised that he needs to update his photos, because he is now making them with slightly darker hides. Everyone's whips look awesome, and I cant wait till mine gets here.

it may not be quite as accurate it looks in the screen grabs as far as scale goes but heck it sure is comfy in the hand. when I first saw it I thought it maybe to small for me to use comfortably but its just about perfect.

DOHERTYJAX yes I should have yours done on the 20th as long as everything goes ok on making the whips. ie; the hides cut smoothly, the strands and bolsters lay well.

These whips that I offer are my version of the Indy style whips. Also I make them at a very low price. They look good, flow well and its at a price almost everyone can afford. At $110 and $160 on 8 plait and 12 plait 8ft whips.

I have done alot more to the whips then what I was doing to them about a year ago. The strands taper better, the turks head is larger and the seam is straight.

I was checking out the DM site and seeing that the Indy whips are going for $900+ But then you are getting a "Real" Indy whip.

But I really want to thank everyone that has purchased a whip from me. The price of leather has gone up a bit, but I'll still try to keep them at a good price.

Yes I do need to update my pics with the newer Indy whip that I am making. Thanks to all see you soon.

I would also like to cnime in. I recieved an 8 plait 8 foot from Gus a few weeks ago and I love it. It cracks smoothly and easily. He is also a great person to deal with. I wiil definatly be ordering from him again.

I just got my whip. It turns out it came in on Saturday but because it had no name on it and there was some debate as to whether or not it was classified a weapon the dorm mail personnel hung onto it until today. I love the color, and despite the pictures I saw here, I was pretty surprised by its size. That being said, it beats the IOAB I handled at the QM summit hands down if not just because of the higher number of plaits. If I can find the time tomorrow I'll take it out and crack it a bit.

just got my gus whip today, it rocks, cant wait to try it out...

In terms of quality, life-span, ease of cracking and weight, which whip is "better," Gus' whip or the Winrich IOAB? I am looking into buying my first good whip and want it to last a while.

I'd go for the whip from Gus to be honest. Its very nicely constructed, is very natural to crack, meaning it takes no effort at all. I'm sure if properly cared for it will last a good long time.

Thanks. I was leaning that way already, but this thread sold me. I'll probably order sometime next month. Now, should I get a 6ft or an 8ft. I am of modest stature, standing at 5'5'' and don't want something that will be too large for me.

The size will depend on what you want to do with it.
If you want an Indy whip definately go for the 8 ft. If you want to do fast combos and and such go for the 6 ft. Your stature shouldn't matter.
When you get it, all us south Flordee boys should to get together sometime. A mini summit.

I have an 8 ft Caicedo, a 6ft nylon, and a 10ft FL cow whip if you want to try them. BB isn't too far for you if you want to spend an afternoon cracking.

Great! Just where exactly is this BB you speak of. I'm in Kendall so anything south of Hollywood I consider "close." Thats not to say I wont go north though. I like the idea of a summit but Pyramid Blaster is right. I think we should wait. I have virtually no gear. I have a pair of close enough pants and that is it. If I could at least get my Keppler and a Caicedo in then it would be even better. But whenever all you Floridians are down, lets do it. Don't wait on me, I'll be there, even if I have to go in Mutt's gear.

Yeah it is Boynton beach...just north of Boca Raton which is just north of Ft Lauderdale. Moving to the events with ya Blaster...

Boynton is great. Only about an hour away from Miami. If you guys could give me about a month and a half so I can get some gear together that would be awsome.

Well, my 8' 8 plait came over a week ago. I've finally been able to take some pictures. It is pictured with some of my other new gear which is a web belt and a bag. I love the whip, but today I started getting a little worried. It seems that the handle is starting to loosen up a bit. It actually feels loose over the core. and I can twist it from side to side. Im not sure if this is normal. If not, any suggestions as to what I can do?

The handle overlay shouldn't be loose.
Gus is a great guy, I am sure he will fix it right up.
Also, are you throwing it with the handle or the knot? Put the ball in the palm of your hand like a swivel.
Don't over condition the handle and knot either...the lubrication can cause the strands to slip.

Now that I think about it, I throw it with the handle. I didn't know the knot actually goes in your hand. I will give that a try.

I don’t know enough about Gus’s whips to say if its normal or not, I’d take it up with Gus directly ASAP.

Some whip makers do not fuse the lead tape to the steel spike at the base of the handle so over time a little play can develop at the base of the handle and turkeshead knot. David Morgans whips will do this, where the knob rotates just abit if you twist it. It doesn’t affect the performance of the whip, its just how they are made.

If the handle is starting to loosen up over the core and sliding around Gus needs to fix it. Just holding a whip by the handle shouldnt cause this problem.

Well, all I can say, is this is the best whip I have ever purchased. And even though it was probably caused by operator error, Gus told me to send him the whip and he will fix it for me.
