I caught the Today Show the other day and there was a guy showing some of the things up for auction and two of them happened to be a Holy Grail prop and a whip from the movie. Anyone else catch this or know about it?

Hi Indy_Werner,

I didn't see it originally, but Mark Allen told me about it yesterday. You can see the clip on todayshow.com

It is from the Pugliese auction. The whip was originally purchased from the Christies Auction, so it is the same whip. You can also find it on ebay.

I'll try to post a pic or two when I get some time later today.

Regards,

Paul Nolan

As Paul said, it’s the The Pugliese pop culture collection auction being held March 15 & 16 by the Guernseys auction house in the Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas. They will be auctioning off one of Indy’s bullwhips, The Grail knight’s sword and two grails, one real one and a false one. They are also auctioning off one of David Morgan’s black bullwhips, used in The Mask of Zorro.

Antonio Bandera’s Bullwhip From "The Mask Of Zorro"
Black leather bullwhip carried by Banderas, in the role of Zorro. Seen in the final scenes of the film. 9 1/2' Sale History: Profiles In History, December 2002.
The starting bid is only $1500 , but its estimate to reach $3,000 or $4,000.

Lot 240

Harrison Ford's bullwhip from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (Paramount, 1981), "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" (1984), and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989). A hand-made sixteen-plait bull-whip of kangaroo hide with 106 in. (2.69m) long lash. Used by Ford, who played Indiana Jones, in all three Steven Spielberg/George Lucas adventure films. Accompanied by a typescript note on Harrison Ford personal writing paper: "This bullwhip was used by me during the making of the "Indiana Jones" films;" signed in black ink Harrison Ford. Sale History: Christie's South Kensington, September 1999
Once again its being misquoted as a 16 plait whip, as we know it’s a 12 plait. The starting bid is $25,000, but it is expected to fetch $50,000 to $75,000. Considering the hype with the new movie I wouldn’t be surprised if it went for alot more.

If you had a whip from the film, would you be brave enough to crack it just once????

I think I would.

A whip is meant to be used. I know Gery uses his Mask of Zorro whip. Alex Green made it a condition of sale.

You'd at least swing on it a few times

I'd go out to the desert and tie myself to the back of a truck with it.

I’d have to try it out and maybe use it on special occasions, but I don’t think it would be my primary whip. It’s really not good for a whip to just sit there coiled up in a case all the time anyway.

Amen Dan!

Paul Nolan has one of the original Zorro whips used by Tony Hopkins in "Mask," (he's pretty sure is the candle snuffing whip. Paul got it from Alex Green.) I think it had been in a private collection for a while, just sitting in a case.

It handles for @#$% now. Because of how it had been coiled up and stored for so long, the leather got used to being in that position, and now getting it to roll out straight and smoothly is difficult. The last time I saw it, it handled better than it had when Paul first got it, but it's still got a long way to go.

And THAT'S why Alex insists on his screen-used whips getting USED.

While Gery typically keeps his Zorro whip in a display case, he does take it out for shows. It is the whip that Steve Harvey is attempting to crack during Gery's appearance on that show, and it makes an appearance, though it isn't used for the candle-snuffing routine on America's Got Talent.

**(and it also made a pretty good pick-up line; "Yeah, that's right. Professional Whip Artist...Say, you wanna see the whip Antonio Banderas used in Zorro?" This was of course a year or so before he met his lovely wife, Scout! ;-) )

The Other Dan

**(And if Gery disavows this story, I have two words for him: Cracker Barrell!)

The whip went for "only" $57500 to an online bidder. There were a total of 25 bids from 3 online and an unknown number of live bidders. The winning bid was from an online bidder "davidm**** (hmmm I wonder?).

Although far too rich for my blood; that is really not as high as most people would have thought it would go considering the iron-clad provenance and the autograph as well.

FWIW the auction house has a surprisingly low feedback of 90.4%

More completed auctions:
real grail went for $35000 (started at $8000)
false grail went for $5000 (started at $4000)

sword still open

I was in Vegas this week for Showest and had no idea about this auction until I saw this thread. I made sure a trip to the Palms was at the top of my list of things to do. There was so much to see, I really enjoyed seeing all the different auction items. Thanks so much for posting the information. Here are a few of the pictures I was able to take. Sadly I had to leave yesterday and did not get to stay to watch the auction.

BullWhipBorton, in my excitement over seeing so many iconic items at once I neglected to take any pictures of the Grail Knight Sword. I took pictures of most sides of the Grail Cup for reference. I messed up some pictures on the False Grail, I was not using flash and they came up a little blurry. So I only have one or two of that.

The Zorro Whip was at the bottom of a display case and had some big items above it so there was little to no light. Along with the Indy items I was geeking out over seeing the Jaws ORCA boat letters, the Rocketeer Helmet, and Reeve's Superman Costume. I really should have spent more time there as there was really too much to take in if you enjoy movies and such. Many of the items/costumes were not in cases. I could not believe you could handle the Superman and Planet of the Apes costumes, and Beatles suits to name a few.

No worries Ben. I can imagine it was probably a bit overwhelming seeing that many iconic film and historic items in one place. I just apprecate you getting such good pictures of the Indy bullwhip, do you mind if I use them in the bullwhip update for the main site?

Unfortunately, I left town on Friday, I did not get to stay for the auction. Thanks for the link, your report was a real nice read. I wish I would have been able to see the live auction.
