I'm getting closer to making new whip No.1. This will be the first whip I have made in about 20 years - started in my teens and now I'm middle aged. I plan to make it in roohide, 8 plait, Indy version. I wanted to ask a question of some of the whipmakers here. I did a search on this topic but was still unclear on some points.

How is a good way to bind the transition, or stiffen it slightly (not a lot)? Would you simply wind it tightly with thread? How many layers of windings? Would the thread by some kind of polyester thread? Obviously you would need to make allowance for the extra material in the thong for the final diameter.

Artificial sinew is what I find best.....bind between each layer of the whip, I go round and round the handle to about an inch before the end of the pin then diagonally over the transition (take it out on the thong as far as you choose) then back over itself but opposite ways diagonally....tie it off and roll, if you roll it firm it flattens and doesn't effect the diameter of the whip, repeat this between each layer.....
