I am looking at getting my first bullwhip and I was curious as to what people would suggest, should I go for an 8plait or a 12plait?
Thanks!

Hi,
in cracking you shouldn't feel any different. I have few whip made with 8 strands and these were good. 12 plt is much more "Indy in look" and a bit more expensive.
If I will have money, I'll take 12 plt. But I think it's rather because I prefer look of that 12 plt, not because cracking better. Good maker will make you a good whip with even rope
.

Karol

The answer really depends on you. Plait count isn’t the biggest factor when choosing a whip, what’s really important is to just get a well made whip; especially for your first one that you’re going to be learning with.
Personally, I’ll almost always recommend a 12-plait bullwhip over and 8 plait, that’s just my preference but if the whip is made the right way, you really shouldn’t feel the difference between the two. The classic Indiana Jones bullwhip is 12-plait, but they can get pricy. At the same time if your thinking about getting a 12 plait whip “e-bay special” because you only have a couple hundred bucks to work with and its sounds like a deal, you are much better off getting a well made 8 plait whip from a respectable whip maker who knows what he or she is doing, as your going to be getting a better quality whip, that’s been balanced out properly and which you’ll get great results actually using.
So, You need to ask yourself, how much do you want to spend? What type of conditions will you use the whip in, on the grass? on the street? Do you want it made from cowhide or kangaroo hide? Each has pros and cons and reacts better under certain conditions. Does your whip need to be screen accurate? Do your homework, read though some of the past posts that have covered these topics and talk to some of the whipmakers here so you can find the best quality whip that will fit your needs.
