My vote goes to the Wested horsehide. It is soft and supple, yet substantial enough in thickness to feel nearly bulletproof. Like wearing leather armor.

Hey Mike Jones, welcome to the forum!
In my opinion, if you want something thats not going to rip at the seams or fall apart in a couple of years or sooner, I would suggest a Gibson & Barnes Expedition. I own a couple and they are built to last.
Best regards,

looks like the first 2 are the novapelle (wested's pd cowhide).
the last one, i believe, is _'s old predistressed cowhide (none novapelle.....same hide that wested makes their wolverine jacket out of)that was fed an extreme diet of pecards.
correct me if i'm wrong. KT....Patty???

He didn't ask, "which are your favorites?" guys. He asked which were the best in quality and durability. Gibson & Barnes and US Wings are definitely tougher than Wested. The stitching will hold up better. I can’t comment on TODD’s, but it’s doubtful his jackets are sewn to military spec like Gibson & Barnes and US Wings. Cheers
PS- if you want a durable hide, stay away from lambskin.

oops my bad.....best quality and durability.....g&b is definitely up there. us authentic is not too far behind that but is beaten in the SA department.

Really? I'm still trying to make my decision... I was leaning toward lambskin thinking it would be soft, etc. And the authenticity factor...
But I'd like it to last. I see Horsehide mentioned earlier. Is this a popular choice?

The hide with the best strength to weight ratio is goatskin. Horsehide is a nice hide too. It’s just a little heavier.

Horsehide is really soft, but it's also heavy. I prefer the horsehide, in that it feels durable, and a real adventurer's jacket, if that makes sense, but the lambskin is more accurate.
These are pictures of my horsehide I posted in another thread, might help you.

I haven't seen any jackets other than Wested to reccomend, but I'm really really pleased with my Wested horsehide and so think it's a good choice.

Thanks to all, I have seen the G&B they cost too much, and having as soon as taken a jacket "Belstaff" my mother kills to me!
Task therefore that I will opt for Wested Horsehide, it is found also predistressed???
Posted: Tue Feb 26, 2008 2:32 pm
by Vivli
I don't think you can get it predistressed no, unfortunately. I also get the impression it's quite hard to distress too, due to being pretty durable, but I haven't actually tried.
Novapelle might be a good hide if you want a predistressed jacket. It's also screen accurate to Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls!

Mmm, this is "novapelle" cowhide???
also this seems enough resistant...interesting..
Posted: Tue Feb 26, 2008 2:50 pm
by Michaelson
It is pre-distressed cowhide, if that's what you're asking.

by Vivli
Yeah, that's it. Wested offer it as a hide, and you can request a Crystal Skulls cut I think (you might have to ask over the phone for that, not sure...).
I don't know if anywhere else offers the Novapelle. I visited Wested and saw the Novapelle jackets, and I have to say they look amazing. If I wanted a pre-distressed jacket, that'd of been my choice!

that wants to say that my idea changes in this!
Thanks!

That's what it looks like, but the jacket in your photo is not a Wested. That said, though, from all reports it's a dead ringer.

Has anybody else ordered a Crystal Skull jacket from Wested besides me?
Posted: Tue Feb 26, 2008 5:50 pm
by Indiana G
KT and Castor from what i can remember.

by Vivli
I didn't order one, but I saw one, and have to say, it looked amazing. Just, the Raiders jacket just took it for me.
For a Crystal Skulls one to be on sale, it must have been a returned custom, so somebody must have ordered one, returned it, and ordered another!

For the Crystal skull jacket, I'm gonna wait and see what Tony Nowak charges. If it's a reasonable price, I'll invest in one of those. If not, then I'll go for a Magnoli or a Wested.
Back to the original question -
I have to agree on the Wested Horsehide. I'm personally partial to my goat, but I've heard great things about the horsehide. :junior: -M

The best jacket is a custom jacket because it will have all the details that YOU want.

Just remember, Wested can make you a jacket based on any of the 4 movies, but they were not the actual maker of the CS jacket in Indy IV.

I enter a month I wanted to order the jacket, therefore, in end what advised to me? better the Horsehide or Cowhide pre-distressed?
Posted: Thu Feb 28, 2008 9:04 am
by IndyBlues
Horsehide. To me, pre-distressed cowhide is too light in color, for what we see Indy wearing. Even the Crystal Skull jacket looks darker than the standard Pre-D we've seen over the years.

Since you're in Italy I would stick to the Wested Leather Co. so you won't risk to pay import taxes and by the way Wested was one of the original manufacturers for Indiana Jones films.
To answer to your question directly:
Quality - Wested leathers are all quality
Durability - (durable for what?): I guess horsehide is best for that, depends what are you planning to do with the jacket. I've worn my lambskin jacket for over 2 years now and it never tore apart by itself. If you will just wear it as your daily jacket (or even just for your halloween costume) lamb will be sufficiently durable. If you plan to do heavy stuff on it then horsehide is probably more appropriate.
In order of price...
This is a link for the lambskin (£125)
http://www.ekmpowershop4.com/ekmps/shop ... n-70-p.asp
and here one for the goat (more durable than lamb and priced £135)
http://www.ekmpowershop4.com/ekmps/shop ... in-3-p.asp
if you want a horsehide it's £145
http://www.ekmpowershop4.com/ekmps/shop ... t-89-p.asp
I hope this helps.

Technically, they did jackets for Raiders and LC, so they did 1/2 of the Indy Jones films. Some extra Raiders jackets made their way into Temple of Doom, but those came from Lucasfilm's Archives.

I still consider the indy movies as three of them

Well, if that's the case then, they only made jackets for 2 of the 3....

Anyone else notice that Wested removed the Temple of Doom jacket from their order form page? So apparently they only sell the Raiders and LC jackets.
