TOD Fedora Help

Forgive me if this is rehashing some things already covered here.. but I'm a newbie.
I'm wanting buy a Temple of Doom compatible lid. I hear much about the Federations but they seem a tad large for a TOD look. [Correct me if I'm wrong.] I was thinking a Stetson Temple till I read over the horror stories. What else is there in a reasonable price range [as in under $200] that would work? And be durable!
I saw in a earlier post that Lee Keppler makes a TOD style fedora. Does he still?
Again pardon any reposting! Thanks.

Miller hats has one that works really well for a TOD style fedora. They used to call it a Miller Raider, then it was the Indiana Miller, and now I think they are just calling it the Miller Fedora. Style #257 is open crown. I still have mine, and I think that if I had shaped it and left it alone rather than worked on it endlessly it would still be one of my best hats. The TOD style is pretty varied though, from the shrunken tapered hat you see in the cockpit scene to the tall straight sided hat you see at the end of the movie. For the overall look, I think the Miller is a good choice.

I got a hat from Miller a few years ago - not an Indy hat, but a Miller all the same. It tapered pretty quickly, actually, but the ToD hat did have a taper to it, so that may not be an issue. Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied with the hat, so you may want to take a look at one of these.
http://www.millerhats.com/miller_fedora/257_fedora.html
It's not quite SA, but if you look on the main page, it looks like it could make a decent ToD (it's the one on the right).

I've heard not to get the Stetson Temple wet for any reason, but no one's ever talked too much junk about the Millers that I can remember reading.

The one on the left is the Stetson Temple. I think we can all agree that a side by side comparison favors the Miller. BTW, the ribbons on both of those hats were replaced.

Actually, and I can't beleve I'm going to suggest this...I think that if you changed out the ribbon, the Dorfman fur felt (not that $400 joke) but a regular Fur Felt Dorfman Pacific Indiana Jones hat with a change of ribbon might do the trick.
Ok, now somebody shoot me please, I just recomended a DP hat.

i have the Miller 257. had it for some years now. it is a really nice hat. and yeah it's great for the TOD style but it's even greater as a Young Indiana Jones style hat, with the wider ribbon and so on.
But yeah it does taper. My hat's been soaked a couple of times because of heavy rain and snowstorms. I recently saw a picture of me from paris with the hat on and i was shocked of how my hat REALLY have come to look like (pictures tells the real story. your eyes lie, or is it just you who wont admit that your hat has tapered?
) so i had to go MACGYVER on this one. with a little mix and match, i created my own little "hatblock" and now there's no taper. Phew!

I did the same thing to mine. I couldn't get as much height out of it as it originally had, but since I reblocked it, it hasn't tapered at all.

What started my quest was ordering the "offical" Lucasfilm hat... I got it and like most all the posts I've read about it was disappointed. Without knowing much I knew that it wasn't much of an Indy hat.
If I went the Miller route I would have to bash it myself.. though, I suppose it will work that way regardless to get it semi screen accurate. While I want it as authentic looking as possible it doesn't need to be dead on. At this point at least.

You can actually order it prebashed, but there's no guarantee as to how good of a job they'll do bashing it. Unless your hat is being shaped by an Indy enthusiast, you're better off shaping it yourself.

That should prove to be interesting. The tutorials I've read seem straightforward enough to be doable.
Has your Stetson had a dye run job?

Bashing isn't really hard at all, especially the ToD bash. Be sure to post pics if and when you get it. I thought long and hard about getting one of these.
I've got two vintage Stetsons, and they don't bleed (but that's because they're vintage. The current Stetsons have a tendency to get an extreme taper when they get wet (and I think they're blocked with a taper to begin). I know that the fedora section of the main Indygear page offers some comments on the Stetson, including the bleeding, but I haven't seen it firsthand.

It might be helpful to my quest if I show what I'm looking to replicate. I think I like the Village scene hat

and the one by the campfire.

Though the bridge scene hat is really nice looking, too.

This might be more than you want to spend, but you should know that Todd offers the TOD bridge hat:

Click "personalize your hat with custom styling!" from the Herbert Johnson Fedora page.

Thanks, but yeah. That's a good bit out of my budget.
How is the Peters Bros Temple style custom in terms of durability?

The PB is at the top end of my budget. I'm halfway tempted to see if I can get one of the outlet Stetson Temples and play with bashing it inexpensively. Then later going for something more expensive.
Or I could be making a mistake doing that.... I might.

I'm expecting another Akubra Fed in a few days for this exact reason.
Bear with me and I'll show you just how #### good a ToD hat I can get out of it!
P.S. - Ignore the hat in my avatar. Comparitively, it's rubbish to what I can do now.

Oh, you'll see it.
I'm doing 'End of ToD' Indy at Supanova in Melbourne next month and have done some *ahem* 'fine tuning'.
I won the [cosplay] grand prize last year as Raiders Indy at Armageddon '07 and I'm now gonna try my luck with the beat-up look!

Scratch the Stetson idea.. I just got off the phone with them and it was going to be $85 all told after shipping. So, I'll make a decision out of the other possibilities.
$85's pretty steep for a crapshoot.

So is the defining characteristic of the TOD Fedora tat it has a shorter crown?
Like if Raiders is 5 1/2 is TOD a 5?
Posted: Thu Feb 28, 2008 7:22 pm
by Mark Brody
When it comes to the block, yes, temple has a slightly shorter crown and it was tapered. The bashes in the ToD hats were also much more shallow than any other Indy hat.

The Raiders looks has always been my favorite, but I actually really like a lot of the TOD hats. Maybe it's just nostalgia, that being the first Indy movie I saw.

APE !!! WHERE IS THE BRIDGE SCENE HAT!?!?!?!
For me, that one rivals the Raiders hats.... It must have been a HJ too.

Actually, it has been theorized that the bridge scene hat was a Stetson. (If you dig around, you'll find talk how the ToD hat looked like a different hat in every scene.) Stetson had licensing rights with ToD and ended up having at least one hat placed in the movie. (Remember the Stetson Temple?) Also, when you look at Stetson Indy hat ads, that's the scene the ads usually reference.

Actually, Desi of ScreenUsed sold a TOD hat that was, as his photo research shows here (
http://screenused.com/index.cfm?section ... ndyhat.cfm) pretty conclusively IMO, the bridge hat, and furthermore, and rather astounding to me, was also the same hat in the cockpit scene we all decry as the "bad" hat!
In fact, it appears that hat was in most of the major scenes in the movie. His page doesn't say whether it was an HJ or a Stetson, but I believe his hat is a HJ, which means the cockpit hat was an HJ, if Desi is right.

i don't think desi's is the suspension bridge hat. the hat that he was showcasing in that link matched up to the hat that indy had on when fighting mola ram once the bridge had been cut. these scenes were filmed on set.
the infamous TOD bridge hat was the one he had on during the cutting sequence. they are different to my eyes......but i'm sure someone out there would disagree

What's different about them? I don't see any noticeable difference in the hat between the bridge cut scene and the Mola Ram fight scene.
If you look at a better photo of this
http://screenused.com/index.cfm?section ... em_id=2557 (theRaider.net?), I think you will see the same detail on the ribbon that Desi points out in the other scenes.

look again.......
THE bridge TOD hat:
screenused (desi's) hat:
look at how much more crown you get with the bridge hat...nice and beefy like a raiders. there's is more height/volume in it....that should be a dead give-away. also, the brim is curled more on desi's whereas the bridge hat is pretty straight till the rear of the brim. typically a brim curl will also give the illusing that the brim is shorter, which is why the bridge hat looks more 'hooded' than the one used on the 'death of mola ram' set.
the differences are quite slight of course......if they weren't, they'd fire the continuity director.

I see what you are saying, but I think it's the same hat. Look at the left (his right) top edge of the hat ribbon in the bridge pic. You can see that ragged, "peeling out" effect that appears on Desi's hats' ribbon. I think the effect of a lower crown you are seeing is a combination of perspective (the Mola Ram fight the hat is tilted back slightly, shortening the crown a bit by perspective), and the center dent being smashed in a bit more than other scenes (see other shots from above and behind Indy in that Mola Ram scene- you can see the stoved-in top and back) which could also lower the front crown by a fractions of an inch. If you measure them both out accounting for perspective, there isn't much more than maybe a 1/4" difference in the front crown pinch height between the two, easily accounted for by the smashed-in center dent and/or the perspective difference.
To me it just goes to show how different the exact same hat can look depending on the angle, lighting, conditions (hat bumps and crumples from set use) - I mean, I who would have thought that the dark, tapered-up looking hat seen in the cockpit scene is actually the same one in the Mola Ram fight scene? I never would have, had I not seen the cold, hard evidence Desi presented.
