Would Indy Wear This Pack?

Bags, Boots, Shirts and all other gear should be discussed here.

Would Indy Wear This Pack?

Post by JulianK »

Ok, I'll admit that I'm a backpack/luggage junkie. I own 7 backpacks including some incredible Maxpedition tactical packs. If you need or want a solid pack, I highly recommend checking out Maxpedition.

But that's not what this post is about. I recently ran into this pack and I totally love it! It's so completely different than the tactical packs I have and to me anyway it looks like something that Indy would take on his adventures (if he had a little more stuff to carry). It's oiled canvas with really thick leather flaps. The carry straps zip in if you want to carry it as a case or shoulder bag.

So what do you guys think? Would Indy wear this?

I think the question is, would you wear it?

That is a very adventursome looking pack and I think it'd look quite at home with Indy's other gear.

I think it's totally safe to make some leaps and step outside the 'uniform' box and add these kinds of things to your gear from time to time.

Honestly, I think Indy would be more likely to wear something like this...

http://www.omahas.com/catalog/product_i ... ucts_id=77

But that doesn't mean the pack you were looking at would clash with the costume. I wear various jackets with my Indy fedora (most notably the M41 Field Jacket and WWII Paratrooper jackets). I don't restrict myself only to things Indy would wear, but if I did, I'd probably go with the Czech daypack.

I'd go with the Filson rucksack. Filson gear can be pricey, but it's worth every cent. It's tough as nails and will last you a lifetime. Every piece of Filson gear I have is top notch.

http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp ... age=family

And if that is not big enough, they have all sorts of other gear. And it is all very Indyesque.

I like that leather one JulianK posted better than that Filson, but that's just me.

I agree with Snakewhip. I like the idea of a canvas pack with leather straps (basically, a backpack version of his modified Mark VII), but the Filson looks too much like a piece of luggage on an airport carousal. I think it's just too modern of a design, especially the hardware.

Better yet, you could wait until the movie comes out so you can get a better look at this backpack. Than you really will know what pack he would wear.

I never even realized he had an extra bag. Goes to show how much I pay attention. Great bags. Still like THIS place.

Where they have some pretty cool bags like THESE ones.

If I can ever afford it I'm getting the "no.1 grip" This line has a very old world feeling to it.

I agree. It sure would be nice to have a better look at what he's wearing. However I'm off to South America at the end of March and try as I may, George and Steven just won't let me have a sneak peek at the movie before then!

Personally I don't consider myself a true gearhead in that I don't have to nail down the exact costume in my travels. However I do try to stay within the spirit of Indy with my gear. Frankly these days there are materials that are much better suited to modern day travel than what Indy is wearing in the movies. Factor in the fact that I usally have more stuff than he does and that's why I find a need to have something more substantial than a Mk.VI. That's why I think this pack fits the bill. I think it personifies the look of Indiana Jones with a bit more practicality for real life.

I always liked the extra bag he had in ToD. It's probably the most neglected piece of gear at COW.

Here is the one I have, I have been using it for about two years now and it barely looks broken in.

It pretty darn water repellent and it has all metal buckles. \:D/

? 2 people with the same pack in order? cool!

but i think you should go more canvas than leather like have leather straps but not an entire bag it would look more adventurous.
but i am not telling you dont go all leather it is your desicion i am just giving advice.

I have that same LLBean pack. I've been using it daily to hold my books at school. My only complaint is that it is a little small. It has help up magnificently, however. Not one broken seam.

Personally, I think the Filson pack looks very Indy, but to each his own. The plus side of the Filson pack (or all Filson gear, from my experience) is that it could be dragged behind a truck with Indy and come out in better shape than Indy himself!

I've always admired that line of luggage at the Bass Pro here in Orlando. Looks to be well built.

This is the best screen capture I've been able to get, from the rubber raft scene:
Image
It's in almost every shot in the 'road to Pankot' sequence, usually being carried by Shorty or his elephant. I suppose it contains Indy's tweed jacket, but not his razor

thanks for the picture!
looks like any old leather travel caase with labels on and i sort of thought that indy borrowed the tweed jacket from the guy with the glases that met indy at the palace. and i thought that because he wears his usual indygear underneath.

I have a travel bag quite similar to the ToD bag, which I purchased brand new in 1990. It's been with me ever since. It's labeled 'Picard Water Buffalo' on the inside. I still get compliments every time I use it.

Gobo - That is a nice bag. I tried to do a Google search on "Picard Water Buffalo" but it didn't turn up anything significant. Can you provide any more clues on where it can be found?

A Google search on "picard bag" brought up the company's official site. My bag is probably discontinued, but this one's nice too, if a little smaller.

Gobo - Thanks for the link. Now, how does one go about purchasing one? I don't see a way to buy one online and there are no stores in the United States.

I really can't say, I would suggest emailing the company and asking them directly.

I'd have to say for Indy that bag is a bit to "nice" and to modern. I would think he would use something more along the lines of a military surplus pack or the like. Something simple but bullet proof like the Swiss pack mentioned previously.

I plan on getting the pack when it is positively identified. But I thought, if I'm going to collect gear, why not check all of it out. The bag from Picard's looks pretty SA. Besides, everything looks "nice" when it's new. That's what distressing is for! I still can't get over the difference between a brand new pair of Aldens and a distressed pair!

You can see a bit more of the KotCS pack in this picture.

To me, the Picard bag is exactly the type of bag Indy would have, especially since he actually had one like it in ToD :)

I still can't tell for certain if it's a Swiss Army rucksack. It looks very similar, but the shoulder strap looks a bit different.

What Swiss pack is this everyone's talking about. I mentioned a Czech pack early on, but I don't see any Swiss packs in the thread.

Thank you for that information. I've purchased a Filson Medium bag, based soley on comments from people on this forum, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I don't see anywhere on the attached tag that says where these are made.

Last week I picked up one of these German Ranger Mountain Rucksacks from this supplier:

http://www.majorsurplus.com/German-Rang ... C1940.aspx

They're much more olive drab than the photo suggests, and the conditions range from slightly worn to very worn and dirty; fortunately for me they're semi-local, so I was able to visit their store and select my own rucksack. For $10 it's one heck of a backpack and, except for the woven straps and plastic connectors, it's rather screen accurate when compared to the pack Indy carries in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
