Hat Hair
Ok, so I go out to a business dinner with my associates. I wear my hat with my shirt and tie (Indy jacket, too), and I'm stylin'! I get compliments all around. We sit down at the dinner table, and off the hat must come . My hair looks like I just woke up from a 2 day slumber .
What do you guys do to combat this? I don't want to have to leave the hat at home, but...

Re: Hat Hair
Sorry, but just a quick aside into hat etiquette: technically, the hat should come off when you walk in the restaurant, not when you sit down at the table. Unfortunately, that doesn't help the hair problem.alanseijas wrote:Ok, so I go out to a business dinner with my associates. I wear my hat with my shirt and tie (Indy jacket, too), and I'm stylin'! The only thing I've ever been able to do to combat "hat hair" is to keep my hair shorter. Plus, it seems that when fedoras were in their heyday, most men kept a short haircut as well. I wonder if there's any correlation between the decline in hats and the trend toward longer hair on American men? I'm sure there is.

Well, IMO, having just the hat and jacket on with a shirt and tie is not really dressed AS Indy; rather just a style that I use. Yes, I've heard all of the comments; but they bounce right off.TonyRush wrote:By the way, I gotta ask.....what kind of business are you in where a dinner with associates would allow you to go dressed as Indy?

I am the Service Manager of a Toyota/Mazda car dealership. Some of the representatives from the car manufacturers are Japanese, and The fact that I speak Nihongo(Japanese) helps out a lot!
Also, you are correct -- hat off when entering!
This works well.Mark Brody wrote:You could always stop by the bathroom, wet your hands and run your fingers through your hair. Even without doing that, I find that hat hair goes away about as quickly as I got it in the first place. All the same, make sure the hat doesn't press your hair against your forehead.

I've worn a hat in fall/winter for over a decade, and this is the *one* thing that I feel makes you a Proper Hat Wearer (TM). Sorry, but hats should not be worn indoors. It's rude and makes hat-wearers in general look bad. Please, when entering a building and you open the door with one hand, remove your hat with the other!alanseijas wrote: Also, you are correct -- hat off when entering!
I mainly wear a Homburg, but sometimes my Fedora is the hat of choice - depends on the coat (a more formal wool overcoat demands the Homburg).

Interesting hat etiquette I found:
Hats can be worn to theaters or concerts, but people should remove them if they are blocking anyone's view. (IE Indy 4!)
Hats are removed when inside, except for places that are akin to public streets, like lobbies, corridors, and crowded elevators (non-residential). In a public building (where there are no apartments) the elevator is considered a public area.
You may choose to remove your hat in a public elevator, but in the presence of a lady your hat must be removed.
A gentleman takes off his hat and holds it in his hand when a lady enters the elevator in any building that can be classified as a dwelling such as an apartment house or hotel. He puts it on again in the corridor.
A public corridor is like the street, but an elevator in a hotel or apartment house has the character of a room in a house and there a gentleman does not keep his hat on in the presence of ladies.
Hats are removed for the National Anthem, passing of the Flag and funeral processions, outdoor weddings, dedications, and photographs.
Removed hats are held in hand in such a way that only the outside and never the lining is visible.

Funny, isn't it? Just out of habits formed at work, I tend to take off my hat even when it's just my Red Sox cap as I head into the pub for dart league! I tell ya, the military's brainwashing us...Mark Brody wrote:Between military regulations (where it's not only etiquette, but required to remove your hat), and etiquette itself, I almost always remove my hat indoors.
