Hat Hair

Post by alanseijas »

Ok, so I go out to a business dinner with my associates. I wear my hat with my shirt and tie (Indy jacket, too), and I'm stylin'! I get compliments all around. We sit down at the dinner table, and off the hat must come :( . My hair looks like I just woke up from a 2 day slumber  .

What do you guys do to combat this? I don't want to have to leave the hat at home, but... :?

Keep your hair cut short. It works for me. As soon as hat head starts to creep in, I know it's time for a haircut. You could always shave your head, too. That would definitely solve the problem!

Lot's of good opinions there. Thanks again.

Any new, creative options?

bald patch :-k
Ok now seriously, I had the same problem once, really the best way is short hair, the other one, I have a hair-do a bit like the young Clint Eastwood had, I comb my hair back, that is why wearing a hat do not destroy my hair-do by attaching

You could always stop by the bathroom, wet your hands and run your fingers through your hair. Even without doing that, I find that hat hair goes away about as quickly as I got it in the first place. All the same, make sure the hat doesn't press your hair against your forehead.

You could always wear your hair in a spiky style...that would help keep your hat on in the wind, swinging from a whip, draggin' behind a truck....

Also, don't muss with your hat a lot. This will help avoid most of the hat hair look. Put it on & keep it on until you absolutely need to take it off (indoors... church, resturant, office, home, stc.).

Cheers!

Sorry, but just a quick aside into hat etiquette: technically, the hat should come off when you walk in the restaurant, not when you sit down at the table. Unfortunately, that doesn't help the hair problem. :)

The only thing I've ever been able to do to combat "hat hair" is to keep my hair shorter. Plus, it seems that when fedoras were in their heyday, most men kept a short haircut as well. I wonder if there's any correlation between the decline in hats and the trend toward longer hair on American men? I'm sure there is.

By the way, I gotta ask.....what kind of business are you in where a dinner with associates would allow you to go dressed as Indy? ;)

Well, IMO, having just the hat and jacket on with a shirt and tie is not really dressed AS Indy; rather just a style that I use. Yes, I've heard all of the comments; but they bounce right off.

I am the Service Manager of a Toyota/Mazda car dealership. Some of the representatives from the car manufacturers are Japanese, and The fact that I speak Nihongo(Japanese) helps out a lot!

Also, you are correct -- hat off when entering!

I agree...I don't think that just the jacket and hat is really "dressing as Indy" although some people might view it that way.

I've worn a hat in fall/winter for over a decade, and this is the *one* thing that I feel makes you a Proper Hat Wearer (TM). Sorry, but hats should not be worn indoors. It's rude and makes hat-wearers in general look bad. Please, when entering a building and you open the door with one hand, remove your hat with the other!

I mainly wear a Homburg, but sometimes my Fedora is the hat of choice - depends on the coat (a more formal wool overcoat demands the Homburg).

Between military regulations (where it's not only etiquette, but required to remove your hat), and etiquette itself, I almost always remove my hat indoors. In fact, when I leave a building, I might not realize I've forgotten my hat until I step outside.

Interesting hat etiquette I found:

Hats can be worn to theaters or concerts, but people should remove them if they are blocking anyone's view. (IE Indy 4!)

Hats are removed when inside, except for places that are akin to public streets, like lobbies, corridors, and crowded elevators (non-residential). In a public building (where there are no apartments) the elevator is considered a public area.

You may choose to remove your hat in a public elevator, but in the presence of a lady your hat must be removed.

A gentleman takes off his hat and holds it in his hand when a lady enters the elevator in any building that can be classified as a dwelling such as an apartment house or hotel. He puts it on again in the corridor.

A public corridor is like the street, but an elevator in a hotel or apartment house has the character of a room in a house and there a gentleman does not keep his hat on in the presence of ladies.

Hats are removed for the National Anthem, passing of the Flag and funeral processions, outdoor weddings, dedications, and photographs.

Removed hats are held in hand in such a way that only the outside and never the lining is visible.

That last one is the one that bugs me. There's no comfortable way to hold the hat and hide the liner. The rest of it is fine.

Sure there is. Hold the brim and keep the liner side facing your body. I do it all the time.

You are not supposed to pick up or hold a hat by the crown. Especially a Raiders style hat with a tight front pinch. It will eventually cause the felt to crack and you will have a nice, big hole in the front of the hat.

Funny, isn't it? Just out of habits formed at work, I tend to take off my hat even when it's just my Red Sox cap as I head into the pub for dart league! I tell ya, the military's brainwashing us...

Funny - I find short hair worse for hat hair because it sticks up in all the wrong places. Longer hair seems to hold onto itself and can be brushed back (and made all better) by hand in an instant.

I do agree that if your hair is TOO short, it's difficult to get rid of hat hair. If you buzz it down to 1/4 inch, the only thing that will fix hat hair is a good washing. If you keep your hair at 1/2 inch, the water and scalp massage works in about 30 sec.
