Hi Everyone,
Along time ago I was member on here, I didn't post much, But I was able to get all my Indy gear thanks to this site, With the new movie coming, I feel that's it's time to add to my Indy gear. Over the years I have acquired 3 David Morgans, I noticed that the new whip for Indy 4 appears to be a Terry Jacka, So I ordered an 8ft one from David Morgan, After I ordeded it I realized that the handle appears to be much longer than the other Indy style Morgans, I have not received it yet, so I'm not sure what the color is going to be, I ordered dark brown. but I saw a different post on here and his was a two tone color. It is too late to cancel my order, Plus I'm curious to see how it cracks, because I have never owned any whips other than the morgans. Do you guys have any suggestions on what I should do with this new whip? Is there any one here that is converting these Jacka whips?

Hey Solo, Yeah Terry’s standard Australian bullwhips have a bit longer handle then both David Morgan bullwhips, as well as the ones Terry made for in Indy 4.
The balance on these Australian bullwhips are very different then David’s. Along with the added leverage gained from the longer handle, the weight of these whips is also distributed out differently then what you'll be used to. They have a much lighter handle compared to David’s bullwhip for one and Terry puts the majority of the weight further into the thong where as with David’s, the lead loaded handle acts to counter balance the weight of the thong. While It's never too late to cancel an order or just return it if you don't like it, all in all the Terry Jacka bullwhips are pretty good whips. I’ve used them for well over 10 years and while they aren’t made quite up to the same quality as say David Morgan’s, or even some the custom whip makers we have here, I really like them. David’s catalog describes them a light weight whip, but they are actually fairly heavy for an Australian made bullwhip, especially ones made in more recent years. The transition area on Terry’s bullwhips are also heavily reinforced, making them stiffer with a more gradual bend when compared to David’s bullwhips which as you know, drop off pretty quickly from the handle. Because of the longer handle, the different weight balance and the reinforced transition these whips tend to have a very fast and responsive action which is something that I like and in my opinion they lay out beautifully when thrown. At least that has been the case with all the ones I own or have used.
Since you ordered dark brown, The main body of the whip will be dark brown, but there is a small chance there could be some variation in the color of the knots as you read in the other post. Typically the knots will match the whip, but this two-tone thing seems to be a fairly new development in Terry’s taste in whip making. It really just depends what David Morgan had in stock to send you when you ordered.
While the whip you get won’t be the Indy 4 style bullwhip, it will be very similar. The main differnce just being the longer handle. Sure you could have it converted if you wanted. I know Bernardo del Carpio has had success in converting the standard Australian bullwhip in to a shorter handle Indy 4 version, but I would think that just about any whip maker here could it too with out much fuss. You may just want to use and enjoy it for the bullwhip though, or just send it back for a refund. While The Indy 4 version is currently available at a highly inflated price at the Australian stock saddle co. eventually the plan is to make them more readily available to the public at a more reasonable price, so you might just want to wait to get one later. Let us know when it arrives and your impression of it though.
All the best

I called David Morgan and the whip shipped out on Friday. I ordered it on Thursday. The David Morgan company is very nice to deal with I hate to send it back when it is clearly my fault and stupidity.

I agree, David Morgan has great customer service and is always very outgoing and helpful. They also want to make sure your 100% satisfied with the items you get though. Mistakes happen, but if it makes you feel better, just send the new whip to me and forget all this ever happened

Solo, I'll be interested in hearing your comparisons to the Morgans you have when you get it. I have a Jacka whip that I really like but I've never handled a Morgan.

It's been cold and some snow here in Connecticut! So I have not had a chance to do a side by side whip cracking comparrison of the 8ft morgan and 8ft Jacka whip. But because my 8 ft Jacka was sent to work, I was able to crack it in my big garage here at work. I really liked the Jacka and the way rolled out and cracked with ease. I'll have to eithier bring both the whips to my work and try them or wait until the weather gets better to do a side by side comparrison, But from what I can remember from the morgan, the jacka seems easier to work with because of the light weight! But I am in no way expert on whips or whip cracking! I just received the Indy 4 10 ft jacka, So I am going to have to try this out and compare it to my 10 ft morgan as well. I am very curious because this Indy 4 Jacka has the short handle!
