Hi there fellas, this is my first post on here, but i have been lurking around reading up for months, but have not found anything that i feel gives me the full picture when pertaining to the following questions reguarding hat bashing....

1) when you guys talk about "turning" a hat, what exactly does that mean? does that mean simply rotating it on the wearer's head every so often, or does it have to do with rebashing the hat at a different location on the crown or what?

2)What exactly is effect of using steam from a pot or kettle when bashing/ does it stiffen the hat's shape up or something?

Thanks in advance fellas for responses; i appreciate all input.

Welcome to COW!

The "turn" is the feature on the Raiders hat that caused the brim to warp on Ford's head in the distinctive way that it did (the 'turn" was not used in every scene, though).

To get the "turn" in your hat, you would take a hat with an open or unshaped crown, put it on your head, and turn it slightly to the right until you are satified with the warp of the brim. You would then shape the crown so that the front pinch is centered as usual.

I once received a TOD/LC style hat from Mr. Swales of Herbert Johnson that had a "reverse turn", where the crown was off-center to the left.

If your hat has stiffener in it, using steam will stiffen the hat but you must use steam carefully as it can cause some crowns to taper or even shrink. I speak from bitter experience here. I hope this helps you.

Welcome to COW, AVbat!

As you can see from the infinite posts in this forum, there is almost no end to the amount of info on the Fedora. Type in just about anything into the search engine and you'll find loads of info. I know GCR does one helluva Raiders bash (first guy to pop into my head!), I'm sure he's got lots of pics up here somewhere, including the infamous 'turn'.
