I rarely post pics of my beloved Raiders Wested lambskin, but this weekend my girlfriend and I braved the cold and the snow to go to Winterlude, a local winter celebration with ice skulptures etc. and when I saw this pic, I liked how it showed the distressing of the jacket, and thought I'd share.
(p.s. for anybody interested, those sunglasses were made for the production of Terminator 2! my bud in the entertainment industry snagged 'em for me, and although they never saw screen time, I have had them since 1991 and they're the only glasses that fit my huge head!)

depends on how cold, really...I have an 80's cut cowhide for 'chilly' days, but the lamb is the looser fit, and I can get a sweater or pull-over under it for colder days. 39.4% the last time I checked! ...and they laugh at us in Florida when we go there in February wearing shorts!!! Who's laughing now? We get to wear Indy jackets 9 months out of the year!
So, Gater how is the thickness of the lamb compaired to the cow? Is it something you have to be very careful with (like garment leather) or a bit sturdier like goat? Just curious on you take of the comparison.

The lamb was a lot tougher than I figured, and by FingerLakes '06, still looked practically brand new, so I decided to take a power sander to it so it didn't look so pristine in the photos! (sorry Michaelson for that last part)
as compared to the cow....GOODNESS it's a heckuva difference! the cow is a very heavy jacket in comparison. It feels practically bullet proof! It os much thicker and heavier and I when I wear it to go Geocaching, I never have to worry about it being torn by thorns or branches like I would worry about the lamb. The cow is pretty indesctructable, imo!
I cannot comment on goat as I have never seen or handled one in person.
So the lamb is pretty tough in it's own right just not on the level of a cowhide. So it should reasonably resist basic abrasions & snags fairly well in everyday wearing but not out in the deep brush. I have one of the black Wested goats in the TOD configuration & I was looking into the brown as my next one but I wasn't too sure if I wanted the lamb or the goat again.
a few years back when I hosted the Canada Summit, COW member Guybrush would do some really harsh things to his lambskin jacket in the name of distressing and it took it all. At one point we went to a museum with a wall of jagged seashells and clam shells and he slammed his back against it and rocked back and forth. There were a lot of new scratches, but no cuts or tears. He also did somersaults and rolls on the pavement
yeah..lamb gets a rep as a soft leather, but it'll stand up!
Oh, one other thing... Concerning rain. How does the lamb hold up? I understand it won't melt of course, but does it soak through rapidly or hold it's own?
good question...I usually wear the cowhide in rain...it hold up well...gets heavy, but holds up...and needs a dose of pecards afterwards. the pre-d cow is my 'beater' jacket.
Makes sense. I see in the pic you're wearing the lamb out in the snow, so that weather factor doesn't seem to deter you from wearing it. Well, thank you for this thread & the information.
