I received some Fuller's earth from Todd's Costumes this week.
Having seen Fedora's pics of the Fuller's on the HJ I was inspired to try it on my Federation.
It's a work in progress and I can see revisiting it from time to time, but it definitely gives the hat an Indy "feel".

Yep! I always love the look that Fuller's gives.

Quick question regarding Fullers Earth guys, what happens to the hat if your caught in rain storm. Light rain vs heavey rain. Does it ruin the hat. I've always thought about doing this to my HJ SOC Fedora, but was a little gun shy (or hat shy) to do it.

So, how do you apply Fuller's Earth? When you say "pouncing", I almost imagine one of those chalk bags that baseball pitchers or gymnasts use....they bounce it in their hands and the powder comes out.

Do you dab it on? Rub it on?

Tron, the hat looks good!

Tony, you've got the idea. You can put some Fuller's Earth in a sock and lightly pat the sock against the hat. To focus on smaller areas, you can use a small soft brush.

Ya but, what happens when it gets wet, like from a rain storm.
Do you get fullers mud. lol.

I don't have any experience with fuller's earth, but it's such a fine particulate that I would expect it would just wash off. It's also described as "non-plastic" which would suggest that it does not stay clumped together when it dries.

What does Fullers do on a hat over time? Does it continue to look good or kind of grind itself into the felt and look cruddy?

Having been inspired by ScreenUsed's pics of his original Indy fedora I decided to add some Fullers to my Magnoli HJ.

A little goes a long way and as it blends in and wears off I will touch up as needed. I found with my Federation, it is pretty easy to remove.

That does look good Tron. Nice job on both the Fed and the HJ, but the HJ takes the cake. Real nice job on that. I too am interested in what happens when a hat with Fuller's is caught in the rain as I live in Miami and the rain comes quick and unexpectedley and often catches one with a fedora on.

I don't know about rain, but I suspect it would be ok.

When dry, the Fullers comes off no problem. I actually used the vacuum hose to take it completely off the first time I tried it. I've tweaked my bash by spraying on water while Fullers was on and it caused no problem, certainly no mud. I suspect that if caught in the rain, the worst that would happen would be you would have to re-apply the Fullers when dry.

Of course I could be completely off base!

Ok. Looking around for Fullers Earth only comes up as beauty shops, mechanic shops, etc. and available in 25lb bags. Anyone know if they sell this stuff through costuming stores? Maybe Ben Nye line?

You're correct - when it gets wet, like in the rain, it just comes off. Lookin' good though!! I just took the Fuller's off my AB, but when my new CS one shows up, it'll get the treatment for the 21st, and then come off again.
