Anyone purchased Todd's replacement hat ribbon...

Post by Rook »

...and how hard is it to make a bow?

Alternateively, does anyone offer a replacement ribbon with bow intact, that you just need to trim the length and sew in place?

Thanks,

I wanted to replace the ribbon of my hat and I bought 2 Todd's (just in case).
I like the colour and texture very much but I think they should be a couple inches longer (I used one for one hat, but you can't waste a single 1/4 of inch, or you won't make it with only one).

Thanks for the link to the tutorial! I appreciate it! My Disney Fedora from the 1980s has a brown ribbon that's about the same color as the hat itself. My wife thinks it looks okay, I don't really agree. Compared to my jacket it's too light. After reading that page I might actually just try and redye the original one. If it doesn't work, there's always the material from Todd's. :)

Thanks again for the pointers!

FYI
Just be careful removing and trying to reuse factory ribbons.
As some of you have discovered, the factory tends to stitch the living snot out of the ribbons and bows to make sure they're on good, making them almost useless for reuse.
So be careful.

:-k For some reason ,I think someone here tried using a sharpy on their ribbon once and it didn't turn out that bad.

It's not me that you're referring to, but I have done the same thing, Dalexs, and it worked out just fine for me. :)

One thing for sure, Sharpie ink sure won't bleed in the rain!

I think ol' "The Edge" once did that with a black permanent marker on his Akubra years ago, and it was fine.

Attaching the ribbon itself is more tricky than putting together the bow. However, I've taken a shortcut in ribbon applying. If you're not good at sewing you could always just buy some liquid stitch glue. If you need a ribbon but you're not concerned about having the most awesomely dark brown ribbon possible, you really could get away with buying some cheap polyester stuff on ebay (Todd's stuff isn't that much more expensive). Polyester isn't as flexible as the cotton/rayon stuff, so you'll probably need to iron a curve into the ribbon which also isn't that difficult.

You can also look online to see if you can find the Schiff New Sudan ribbon in the 1 1/2 size. It is darker than the Sudan brown, and is a rayon/coton blend. Much better than that polyester stuff. Fedora

Sharpie huh? Definately sounds easier than unstitching, redying and resewing the thing. Well, I suppose if I mess it up I can always cut it off and sew a new one. :)

Did anyone put a backing behind the ribbon before you... sharpied it? Wax paper perhaps so you didn't slop onto the hat itself?
