Hello,

I have a nice fedora, but unfortunatly, I have a rather oily skin, and after some time, a stain appear in/on the felt...

So, is dry cleaning a good way to get rid of it?
If not, what would you do to remove that stain?

(Yes, I have a leather sweatband)

Thanks

Nicolas

I would look for a place that specializes in cleaning fur felt hats. Fedora (and old school hatters) soak a hat in a naptha bath (yes, as in the stuff you put in your Zippo lighter, which is HIGHLY flammable) which will work out sweat stains and the like. I don't know what dry cleaners or modern hatters would use, but I would only trust my hat to a place which knows how to clean and reblock it properly.

I have a Hoquy wool Beret that a Dear friend and co-worker bought for me on a trip she made to Paris. When it got soiled I took it to the local dry cleaners per instructions in hat. Well when I got it back the wool was clean but the leather band just crumbled in my hands.
I'm even more devastated now then when it happened as my long time friend has passed away at a relative young age due to cancer.
I would take a good hat to anyone but a specialist.
Bob.
