San Antonio cowboy hat shops

Post by Rambler »

There are several Western hat shops in San Antonio, TX. I ask the following because my in-laws live there and I visit occasionally.
Has anyone had any luck getting traditional mens' hats made, cleaned, blocked etc. at any of them? I really had not considered this or I would have gone in a couple when I was there a few months ago.
Come to think of it, I will have to do some looking around in the Baltimore and DC areas near my home and look for any old-school hatters. There is still a fine dress hat-wearing tradition pricipally among African-American gentlemen in those cities.

Paris Hatters is the place I generally go to. It is not far from the Alamo, afew blocks to the right looking at the front. In with the antique stores.

Another option is Texas Hatters. They do custom work, blockings, everything. They used to be in Buda, but recently moved to Lockhart. I have not been to their new store. They have done work for me in the past and it was excellent, real nice folks too. I have been in and out of Paris Hatters, but never any work done. Lockhart is probably 70 miles or so from downtown San Antonio.

Of all the times I've been to San Antonio, I haven't even seen Paris Hatters. Now I know what to look for when I go again!

Like many shops of quality work and product, it is not very impressive in appearance so do not expect a great showplace. Try to get a look at the back room with all of the old blocks and working areas then you'll see it is for real.
