New Whip and Holder Source!

I have located a new whip and holder source near where I live in Texas. The company is called New Braunfels Leather Company. Clinton, the owner, and Paul make leather products by hand and are located in New Braunfels, TX. I have purchased a whip and asked if they would be interested in making some other items. I took them pics of the whip, holder, strap, gun belt and holster. Paul made me a whip holder a few days later and it is great! I am working with Paul on making a belt, strap and holster as well. Those will be coming soon.

I told him that I chat with people online who are interested in "Adventure Gear" and asked if it would it be ok to give out their information as they do not have a website established. They said that they did not have a problem with it and that they do shipping all the time.

Note: The pictures are a little large so give them time to load.

Here is the whip.
Image

This one is a 10 foot whip. Leather non-braided swivel handle. Very good starter whip. He also has whips with natural wood handles.

Here is the holder.
Image

This is a sturdy whip holder. We actually made the holder around the whip so we know it would fit well.

Here are the prices:
12 foot Whip Leather Swivel Handle: $53.90 +shipping
10 foot Whip Leather Swivel Handle: $46.92 +shipping
8 foot Whip Leather Swivel Handle: $39.80 +shipping
6 foot Whip Leather Swivel Handle: $32.91 +shipping
12 foot Whip Non-Swivel Natural Wood Handle: $62.30 +shipping
10 foot Whip Non-Swivel Natural Wood Handle: $56.00 +shipping
8 foot Whip Non-Swivel Natural Wood Handle: $44.10 +shipping
6 foot Whip Non-Swivel Natural Wood Handle: $36.90 +shipping
Poppers: $0.80/ea +shipping (12 or more: $0.40/ea +shipping)
Whip Holder: $15.00 +shipping

The Natural Wood Leather Handle whips are the only Non-Swivel whips they offer.

Before you order, I have to say this.
There have been times in the past when new vendors were alienated from onslaught of calls from IndyGear fans. Please exercise tact when dealing with any new vendor. Especially in this case as they are my "neighbors".

Here is a quote from Indiana John from the old COW for those of you who are new and perhaps missed this topic.:
It's not necessary to give out information when buying a product...you don't owe an explanation...it's a business transaction. Of course, it's not a means to be rude either...so if someone asks, then be brief and very generic--don't associate the purchase with Indiana Jones. If I heard the words "Indiana Jones" as a vendor, dollar signs would light-up for me too! So don't blurt out stuff...

In general regarding any vendors, think before you speak. The best way for this hobby to be ruined...is for someone to say something stupid, and blow it for the lot of us. It only takes one...

Great find! A very nice and cheap starter whip that is reasonably similar to Indy's. That whip holder looks almost exactly like the real one that was posted a few weeks back. Thanks for sharing!

Pyro, is the fall built into the braid or attached separately? I can't tell in the pic, but it looks like it's built in.

Nice finds by the way! Perhaps you can bring some of their work to the summit, if you're able to come in August. I can't wait to see the holster.

Yes. It is built into the braid. Most all the whips I saw in his office are that way.

BTW, I revised my messaged and added their hours of business. Take note as they are a little different than most other establishments.

Yup. I 100% agree with everything you said. Speaking to them they said that they used to make and supply roo hide whips but they were very time consuming. Because I wouldn't know a good whip if it smacked me in the face, this is a good starting point for me. It also makes a very nice prop whip you can hang on your wall if you are just collecting.

The only thing I would add to Kyle's post (& I agree with his points), this does look like a swivel handle bullwhip. What that means is that the handle will rotate on you. A swivel handle whip is only handy for the "overhead" crack, which rotates on the horizontal plane. But the downside to a swivel handle whip is that it makes for a poor target whip. So when trying to crack on a "true" vertical plane, it will "plane" out or not hold that plane. Also the "slapper" type fall that Kyle mentioned is problematic to accuracy as well. The "slapper" or wide fall will cause the fall to "flutter" around instead of slicing through the air.

The insides are probably made with a rope at best. Sometimes there is nothing inside. But most likely if it is a rope, the rope will start disintegrating over time. So you will see rope fibers penetrating through the outer overlay area.

But other than that, the overlay will be sturdy. For a limited budget, this is a good whip for someone starting out. However, the difference between the performance of a double-bellied, kangaroo whip and this thing are enormous. But so is the price. So I would have fun with it, and if you really like the sport of whipcracking, then upgrade to a roo.

Just my .02...

hi,
Usually when I buy an american whip I take off the cheap fall and braid on a real kangaroo hide fall. It makes an american whip MUCH better for cracking. the american cow hide falls break too easily and it's annoying.

Hey pyro do you know what kind of core those whips have nylon or what?

Posted: Thu Jul 18, 2002 2:46 pm
by Pyroxene
Yup. Nylon core. Probably why the whips are so inexpensive.

I am learning more about this all the time.

What is at the center of a David Morgan-type whip?

Posted: Thu Jul 18, 2002 3:21 pm
by Sergei
The David Morgan whips, the core and plaited bellies are made entirely of kangaroo.

Hey Pyro, is that shop anywhere near the summit coming up? Maybe we could make it a stop if its not to far out, and I'd love to get one exactly like you have there, would it be possible for me to call him and say "just like pyro's?" ;-)

Unfortunately, New Braunfels is 234 miles from Fort Worth. However, you can call and talk about the leather handle whips. Paul is the guy and tell him you saw the whips online and you are interested.

PS - I just sent you a message.

AZ, you might check your airline's policy on whips in the carryon luggage. I believe airlines can confiscate bullwhips if it's in the carryon...I do believe we can carry them inside the checkin baggage...but you might double check with your airline, as we would all not want to see a gearhead have their whip taken up by security.

This is the website that has the current listing of what is allowed on board,
aka carry-on. Bull Whips are still on the list. FWIW.

I got the whip and holder pyro and they are simply the best I've ever owned! Do you get a good crack with yours? Everyone at the shop was extremely helpful and great to work with!

That's awesome! I am happy I could help. Yes, I got to crack mine. I like the handle on this whip because, for me at least, it only swivels when I want it to. But, if that becomes too much of a problem, under the post "Swivel Suspicion" I learned how to stop it.

Happy Cracking
