Indy's winter Jacket?

Hello Folks,

Does anyone ever try to customize his jacket to make it a winter jacket (by adding something beetwen lining and leather)?
How would you proceed to put some warmth in this garment?

(That would be helpfull if one day I go to live in Scotland...)

I think I remember someone had Wested put a winter lining in a Raiders jacket, maybe fleeze, and or/discussion thereof. :)

Fleeze would be good I think, since it's thin to keep drape and shape, but still warm.

Well, the "screen accurate" way would be adding a cardigan beneath your Wested.

Personally, I just wear a totally different but very similar jacket in winter and / or polar regions. A flight leather jacket classic: the B3.

Magnoli's hybrid with the wool lining looks pretty cool....

I've bought this brown woolen cardigan. It's great for work, vintage, yet modern, and it's a great companion piece for my leather jacket.

Very happy with it. :)

(btw, I'm not dead .. yet ;). Just very, very busy with my own company, living on my own, ... ). :)

As a Scot who got his first Wested a few weeks ago, I think you'll need more than a fleece to keep you warm.

The day I got it there was a bit of a Northerly breeze, probably a force 8 or 9, carrying rain and sleet, so I thought I'd go for a stroll to see how the jacket held up.

I hadn't noticed that the pockets weren't the patch type, so with that force of wind and the horizontal rain the stomach area of my shirt was completely soaked after a few hundred yards, and of course that just wicked upwards and round my back. The fact that the pockets on the off the shelf raiders don't bear much resemblance to the photo's on Wested site didn't help much (they're gigantic!). I came close to sewing up the hand-warmer pockets that day!

Ah yes, sounds like a fine summer's day in Scotland. I do so miss the Scottish weather ;)

I too find that while a great jacket the Indy jacket really isn't the most ideal cold weather jacket, unless you have about 7 other layers underneath it.

Yep. Sorry folks, if it is freezing cold or raining, Buff is doing something other than Indy gear. Maybe I should start wearing Sgt. Murtaugh gear. "I'm too old for this $#!+."

Yeah, I have a brown cardigan sweater w/scarf similar to the MOTB sweater and scarf Harrison wore. I'm usually very toasty outside on cold days with this combo.

I've been wanting to make a winter-Indy hybrid for some time... just waiting for the right guinea pig. Ken, what's up? ;)

JM;
Well, I didn't mention the 3 other jackets and the heated blanket you should wear over your Wested as I took it for granted you'd know. ;)

I wear my Wested until a few degrees above freezing temp myself. Basically, not in the winter but all the other seasons on and off.

Well, I just had the opportunity to take some pictures of "my" winter jacket while I was visiting a Templar's church near my parent's home ...

These B3 were made for really low degrees and keeps you warm in every cold which possibly could hit you. Still my first choice if winter's coming and it gets too cold for the cardigan / Indyjacket combination!

usually a thick shirt (Cabelas or cotton t-shirt works) under the cowhide Wested is ok for the days leading into, and out of Canadian winter, or hanging by the St Lawrence river in the wind blowing off the water!!

Image

...for the actual dead of winter, when it is in the -30's (that's Celsius) then the Wested lambskin with a fleece pullover underneath and a scarf seems to do the trick.

with the wind, we were in the -18 range yesterday, and my gal and I went to a winter fair, and I was fine with the fleece/lamb combo and jeans.

'course...they grow'm tuff up here in Canukistan!

I also need a few more paychecks under my belt before I can jump on said train, lol. I need to make up for the new Wested and new Todd's I bought in the last oh two months before I can let myself buy another jacket. However, as addicted as I am, I know it will happen again one day.

My favourite winter jacket is the ANJ-4. For me this is the Indy winter jacket.

Sorry, this jacket is not mine. The pic is from the Aero site. My father uses to wear the Aero ANJ-4. That´s where I know it from. Unfortunately his jacket is two sizes too big for me.
I wish I could afford one for myself.

Then again he cannot wear my jackets, they are just too small. That´s the retribution.

Hiya Fellas!

I've often thought about this and have approached the problem from various angles in the past, pretty much the the same as you guys have actually:
Wested together bodywarmer ,Wested together with Aran Pullover,WW2 Bomber Jacket (that was "real" cosey even at a slightly chilly -23 °c !!!) etc...etc...
One alternative that I quite liked for was my Federation Fed together with a Parker Coat and scarf somewhat similar to Han Solos garb on Hoth( in ESB )together with a nice pair of thermal lined trousers /pants( for all you americans out there  !) .
It wasn't half bad :D ...

Having said that I've still succumb to just ordering a Men's Lambswool Shawl Collar Cardigan from Lands End in Spicy Brown!!!! :D :D

I've had Wested put a flannel lining in a jacket before.

I have a goat that I bought some time ago from someone who was a member here. It has a flannel lining for added warmth. Since I bought it for a mannequin display, I have planned on replacing it with another with the standard lining. After all, I don't think the mannequin will mind.

Well, I am one of the exceptions. Winter is the ONLY time I can wear my lambskin Wested. I got one of the Men's Lambswool Shawl Collar Cardigan from Lands End in Spicy Brown and a brown wool scarf, but the number of days I can wear that combination are limited and mostly pre dawn hours.

I don't need any special lining in my lambskin Wested. I just wear my jacket as is with just a polyester ladies shirt (I don't wear cotton because I need a cooling shirt) and thin cotton tank underneath. I'm still sweating bullets just wearing that in winter and we had a couple of days in January where temperatures were in the 30's Fahrenheit.

30's! In Calgary, that's about when we switch to our light coats.. :p I'm hoping my new jacket will provide warmth so I can retire my current jacket from duty, it's lined with thinsulate and has been good to me in the -30's.

Ah...So, you admit you switch jackets. I'm still wearing the same jacket and sweating to death (well, almost).

What's wrong with cotton? Surely better than poly..

CM wrote:What's wrong with cotton? Surely better than poly..
OK, this is starting to go off topic. There's nothing wrong with it, other than being extremely hard to iron even with a professional iron. Of course, it also depends on the fabric weave and blending of other materials. I do have a few 100% cotton and cotton-blend shirts, but they sag around the front of the shirt and everywhere else. I've noticed this on all ladies cotton shirts in the $10 - $25 range. They just don't make ladies cotton shirts the same as men's shirts. However, in the higher-priced/quality range, the shirts do look and fit better than in the lower-priced/quality range. With my polyester shirts (actually, it's a poly blend consisting of polyester, nylon, and spandex), I get a quality, fitted shirt.

I also think that the polyester shirts are more cooling than the cotton shirts. When I ran track in high school and the first two years of college, I used to wear cotton t-shirts and cotton denim jeans (yes, I used to run in them for practices only). I remember getting hot very easily and the cotton material sticking to my skin and sagging on my body. After I switched to microfiber and polyester clothing, I never looked back. Microfiber and polyester clothing are lighter and you stay cooler longer (at least to me they are). But, the Indy shirt is the only cotton shirt I'll wear. Plus, the poplin weave means no sagging. :D

OK, back to our regular programming of Indy winter jackets. This B-2 jacket sold at Lost Worlds, Inc. could be a good substitute. If only it had two pockets instead of one, was darker in color, and didn't have that belt on the bottom of the jacket.
http://www.lostworldsinc.com/B-2_Horseh ... Jacket.htm

An even better jacket is the custom G-1 jacket at FlightJacket.com. This looks more like the Indy jacket, but with a fur collar. You can even customize it to have Thinsulate lining for the winter.
