This is my first post have been enjoying reading the info on the forum and have got some useful info. I have bought the wrong size Aldens however,I was measured in a shop with the metal contraption and went with the result but my feet seem to be wider at the front than the device indicated. I have been wearing them for a 10 days now but i have finally decided to admit defeat and cut my losses. I have to say they are very well made boots and i am considering going for a pair wider than the one i bought . If anyone UK/Euro based would like them let me know maybe we can make an arrangement.

Humm. Sounds like the translation of your measurement from European standard got MIS-translated when it got to U.S. standard.

Thanks for the sympathy, im going to put it down to experience.
Im glad i tried them, other than the sizing thing they are very very nice boots and im looking forward to getting the correct size but trying not to think about the cost eeeek.At least i can now give some feedback to anyone who is looking for info on Aldens. I do think you are right though the sizes must have been mixed up somewhere along the line.

Well, if you're not going to keep them, you might want to consider putting them up for sale in our classified section to recoup your monies.

I know folks are looking for Aldens in that size area all the time.

Woohoo have ordered my replacement pair of aldens in the correct size this time, credit cards are good for something at least! Have sent the other pair to Fordperfect and hope they are the correct size for him.
Looking forward the new pair arriving, just hope they arrive before i go away for christmas. Next plan is to find a Fedora but was thinking to buy one a size too small .

Yes i have just gone for the next width up as the only problem with the old pair was the width, D was way too narrow but i think there was a miscommunication with the width fitting. This time i tried the self measuring method and lo and behold was well and truly an E fitting.
The length of the boot was good the heel fit is near perfect the tongue didnt slip to the side and they were comfortable but there was a nagging problem that they were just too narrow.

Common problem is that people think that the width of a dress shoe in D would be the same as a work boot. Truth be told D is average width in shoes and E is average width in work shoes. It is difficult when you actually do not have the Indy Boot to try on before you buy. The Brannock (sp?) device is usually pretty accurate if read properly. Hope the replacements fit well and be sure to post the original pair you purchased in the Cairo section, I'm sure they will sell.

From my point of view i would recommend that anyone wanting to buy Aldens boots untried go and get measured in a shop with a brannock device and then do the self measure thing to confirm your size. Another thing is check the mesurement on the device yourself before you leave the shop, as i found out it is easy to make a simple mistake. I didnt get the chance to post them ,they went straight to Fordperfect a couple of days ago.

For the record, I wear a size 10.5 US and wear a 10 EE Alden 405.

That's strange, usually Aldens do not run narrow so 10.5 E should work. I guess it would depend on the make of shoe your wearing in 10.5. May be internationally made which at times can be off.

They go as narrow as a AA width.

Sorry miscommunication by me - what I was attempting to say is that I found it strange that Dr J had to go from a 10.5 and would assume d or e width to a 10 ee in Aldens. But it may depend on the 10.5 brand shoe he is wearing. Michaelson of course is correct Aldens come in all widths which is why they are one of the TOP work shoe manufacturers on the market. Seriously anyone who must wear a work shoe needs to think about getting these. Once you get over the initial weight of the shoe, you will be very surprise how good your feet feel after a day on them.

I can relate to the narrow feet issue. I'm in a 9.5 A width Alden 405 and think that if I had an AA width, it would not be too small. I measure right between an A and an AA width on the Brannock device, so it is usually critical for me to try a shoe or boot on before I buy or wear it off of carpeting. On some lasts, I fit the AA width, and on others, that is too narrow. When I saw that Alden made the 405 in my narrow widths, I was estatic. My narrow size is getting harder and harder to find, and they usually all run around the price of a pair of Alden 405s anyway.

Is it true that you narrow feet people cant stand in high winds ? I mean, there has to be balance issues .

No, but I do list to port most days. Of course, after to much port, you tend to list anyway, but I digress.....

I've joked plenty of times in the past that all I need to do around a ski resort is take off my shoes and start skiing down the slopes. It can be a hassle sometimes, but when you have feet like ours, stores like Aldens and Allen Edmonds are life (feet) savers. We can't just walk into a normal shoe store and find something that fits.

Wow, tough break, but how specific and custom are Aldens? I was planning to order a pair but I feared the same sort of thing would happen to me. Since there is no Alden seller in my neck of the woods any suggestion before I order a pair?

I had a bad leg break a few years ago and arthritis has begun to set in on my break so my right foot size varies from time to time (11 to an 11.5). Any suggestions?

Best go to a professional in the field and have yourself professionally measured. You're in Murfreesboro, right?

If so, as I recall, there was a REALLY good shop back behind Paleo's Grill off 41 that not only measures you, but can order Alden's for you as well. I got my first pair there, but that was quite a few years ago, and I haven't been back since. I can't even remember the shop name now. Those brain cells died long ago, unfortunately.

The only shoe store there now is Liz and Marty.

There use to be a place called Pig and Parson's which carried high end items (I actually got my first Fedora there). Liz's shop carries some high end shoes. If it's the one your talking about I'll head over there this weekend to find out what they can do for me. Thanks for the tip Michaelson!!!!
