I intend on ordering either Magnoli or Alden boots this week. I prefer Magnoli for personal reasons, but I am asking for your comments on the leather quality of Magnoli before I order sight unseen. I know Alden leather, but how does Magnoli measure up in durability? BTW-Magnoli's site is 'question overloaded', so I divert to y'all.

Wow! I was thinking of getting a custom Indy in black from Alden, but now that I see Magnoli offers them....I had no idea. I am curious to see what others who have these boots from Magnoli have to say.

Likewise. I very much like the custom fit, and that the boots can be ordered without the moc-toe stitching, which to me only introduces an avenue for water entry. Magnoli can also build the heel height to request as well as the sole material. If the leather thickness/durability is up to par, I'll order a pair this week.

Let me know what is said, because I'm looking for a pair of black ones and Magnoli may just be the person to go with on these.

Hi fellas, I don't own aldens, but I have a pair of Magnoli's.
Overall I must say I am disappointed with my purchase.
The leather is very classy and shiny. A little too shiny for me. When they arrived, I could see a reflection in them.
The toe is slightly squared and seems to through off the look.
the heels have less rubber than the pics I have seen of Aldens.
The rubber on the heel is also not very strong.
They were brand new when I took a trip to las Vegas. I walked up the strip and back down. In that time, I wore through the heel to the point of hitting leather.
Lastly, the fit is great, but I find them hard to stand in all day. I'm not sure if Aldens are any better in that respect.
Magnoli is a great guy, and he has great products. I just wanted to give these shoes a fair review.

Thanks for the info, that seems inline with the pics of the heel/sole.

You've GOT to be kidding??!!!
I walked the Vegas strip round trip 4 times from Circus-Circus to The Luxor, with SEVERAL side trips to boot, when there in May in a pair of walking shoes from Wal-Mart, and had little wear appear in those shoes.
What in the world is THAT all about?

Rode it too, TR.
Sometimes it's 'one comes by every 15 minutes' was a complete and total lie!
I went to Vegas to see stuff. Not stand at a bus stop for 30+ minutes at a time.

But I'm sure if you sat at the bus stop, you'd STILL see stuff! Just a different KIND of "stuff."

I wish I were kidding. It's hard to joke about shoes that expensive. Let me clarify, the whole heel didn't wear down..the sides of the heel that see the most contact did though, and it is down to the stacked leather. It wore down like an eraser on a number 2 pencil. Indy Mag really needs to source some harder rubber for the heel.
Next time I'm in Vegas, I'm going to take the tram..definately

Thanks for the info on that one...It's too bad to hear that....Oh - I did a combination of the tram and the walking....best of both worlds...

That's really strange. I wore my boots for about a year before that first rubber heel wore through on one edge. I wonder if your heel was from a bad batch or something. I'll look into this some more. In the least, we can use a thicker rubber to give some extra wear to that portion of the heel.
Kind regards,
Magnoli

Hehe, when I lived in Vegas...one night at the Luxor, I waited for the tram for an hour before I realized it was 4 in the morning and it didn't run that late...heh heh.....I'm surprised I didn't fall asleep out there as intoxicated as I was.
But if it helps, I saw LOTS of stuff...especially in Glitter Gulch.....
ON ANOTHER NOTE -
I had a question about Magnoli vs. Alden.
The Aldens are supposedly "orthepedic" style shoes, etc. how do the magnoli's compare to the Aldens in this aspect???
I want to order a pair of Alden's but would love some other colour choices which Magnoli gives, yet with high archs as I have I really want some shoes made for some hardcore walking.adventuring.

I have been wearing my own boots for over a year now and I find them as comfortable as my Aldens. Losing the steel shank gives you a little less weight, but I imagine that you're losing some support in their as well. I wouldn't recommend my boots if you genuinely need orthopedic shoes for medical reasons, but as regular boots, they seem comparable in comfort to the Aldens, at least in my opinion.
By the way, we are officially switching to thicker rubber heels now...
Kind regards,
Magnoli

you have chosen....WISELY.
It's great having a vendor around that is as receptive to the needs of the customer as you are, Indy Mag. It's highly appreciated.
