Pocket Bullwhip

A bit of help, please. Searched, but not finding either advice regarding current "pocket bullwhip" makers or active photo links. (Would like to see one of these small wonders.)

Any input is appreciated. Perhaps the proper search nomenclature is escaping me.

Try searching this forum for either "pocketbull" or just "pocket". Unfortunately though I don’t know of any whip makers that are currently offering them for sale.

As far as I know the first person to make them was member "The_Edge" he used to specialize in them, but that was a few years back and I don’t know if he still make them or not.

Jim Markell who now operates Northeastwhips.com had been making nice ones a couple of years ago too. Here is a picture of one of Jim’s pocket bullwhips that i had handy.

Most of the whip makers here have made pocket bullwhips at one point or another though and could probably make you one if asked.

Appreciate the leads. The "Edge" posts and "Atta-Boys" for his whip, peaked my interest in the pocket bullwhip. But, it seemed interest and makers, just dried up.

I bought one of Kyle Shold's pocket bulls a few years back and have thrown it from time to time. I just never seemed to get into it until I read Tom Meadow's book on using the whip for combat. Although the handle is a couple inches shorter than what Tom recommends, the length is fine and I've developed a entire facination with the pocket bull as I've applied the filipino striking angles---Kyle's pocket bull literally cracks itself as the movements are performed. I really like it now.

Kyle's pocket bull was the first of it's type I ever saw and handled at the first QM summit. I've coveted one ever since.

I got to crack a pocket bull either last year or the QM before that. Those things are lots of fun! I'd love to have one, but I don't have the extra couple bucks to spend on buying one. One day though... I'll get one... or steal one... or something. We'll see.

I saw a pocket bull type bullwhip years ago when I first started looking for a bullwhip. I'd wanted one for a very long time. Just this year I bought the "official" Latigo-y-Daga whip from Peter Jack. It's one of the two used/recommended in Tom's book. I love it! I'll try to throw a pic on here later today.

Now, that being said, I'd love to have a pocket bull if they can be made w/o any metal parts. They look like they'll coil much tighter and be most easily concealed.

Here it is. You can see the lead weight he puts in the pommel. There is also lead shot running up part of the core.

Doc,

Overall plaited length is 4.5 feet with about 2 more feet of fall. Handle I'd say is about six inches. I have no problem cracking it in hallways or my small barracks room.

Peter Jack also makes one, but it goes by a different name and you have to order it directly from him. From the website, "This whip has been designed with the help of "Tom Meadows" to set a standard whip of 4'6" in length and have a lower profile heal knob for hand passes. It has a butt weight of 4 ounces and number 3 shot - into number 5 shot running down into the thong. It has a double plaited belly all cut from 1-1.2 mm top grade Kangaroo hide so it will keep it's shape for longer. It has a 7 inch handle stiffener of alloy not steel to give the balance feel much like a sword with good balance."

Regarding cost, it's $198 plus $29 shipping to the US and include shipping insurance plus a tub of his whip wax, 4 spare poppers for the end of the whip, and care of instructions.

Wow, TR, what is that? A four footer? It does look very tiny, especially next to your regular size Indy (10-footer?).

I think I had mentioned a pocket bullwhip from Kyle yesterday and I recalled this thread. There is so much great information in this forum! And Peter Jacka makes a small bullwhip too but I have not seen or handled his.

Has anyone here ever handled one of Peter's combat whips?

I have one of Kyles pocketbulls that I purchased way back in the day when they were first introduced....the tag had "#9" written on it. I use it like once a month and it still hasnt really broken in. An awesome extremely unique addition to any Indygear collector. I love it. VERY well made and powerful for being so tiny.

And these I took next to a penny and one with keys for size reference and ended up just loving they way it came out. It looks really tough and cool. I love the way it is still shaped exactly like a Morgan only much much smaller. The butt and handle look awesome and then the whip coming out of the ringknot looks full and dangerous. Very cool whip to own. Love it.

I pecard it occassionally, changed the cracker out about 6 or 7 times since I had it. I don`t know anything about the mechanics of a whip but it cracks very well except that it has always been more of a snap than a crack. But my snakewhip by Mr. Foxx is the same length and size and cracks alittle more intimidating than this one. Still a big favorite for me.

Yeah, the one that Sergei handed me at that first summit really impressed me. A VERY nicely made little whip.

Sold. I've needed a chain/fob for my antique Bulova for a couple years now. I think one of these will fit the bill nicely!

Here are two snakewhips I have made by our very own Loui Foxx. They are able to rolled up very small and fit in the pocket. The red is 6 feet and the tan is 5 feet. But I really wanted to show the David Morgan Dog Quirt. It is 8 strand, shot loaded, about 30 inches. It comes with a double whitehide lash but I replaced it with a longer red hide and added a cracker. It cost $150 and cracks just fine but is very tiny yet manageable.

This one is the one I carry with me as my "sidearm/tool". It cracks well enough to scare off animals if needed, can be used indoors in small spaces, and so far has proven itself well in for self defense....kinda like Pootie Tang and his belt! Sa Da Tay

Hey folks,

I suppose technically I am still making these whips (and lanyards) but my turn around on them is not that great. I've got a lot of other projects in the works, including my own comic book, and leather braiding has fallen to the back of the line the last few years. I still enjoy it but when I have the time I choose drawing and freelance design gigs over plaiting. I just want to be honest with folks as to where my time and energy is being placed. I do appreciate the renewed interest!
