Name Calling...

Stealing a page from the 'Fedora' forum, I decided to let us leather jacket affecionados take a crack at the name calling... or in this case, let others take a crack at us. Why should the fedora folks have all the fun? ;)

I know on more than one occasion, my Indy jacket(s) found me being called 'James Dean', but I'm guessing that this has more to do with my predilection for wearing it with a plain tee and a pair of jeans.

So tell me, what have you guys n' gals been called while wearing your Indy jacket out in the world?

I don't understand people making rude comments, I see a guy wearing a bomber jacket with Flying Tigers patches who is obviously not a pilot from WWII, I am not going to say anything, or if I do it would be nice jacket.

If I see some dorkazoid wear some bazaar outfit I am not going to go out of my way to insult him/her I might quietly say something to my wife but never loud enough for them to hear.

I do remember being at a gun show and saw a long haired hippy type [ponytail half way done his back] wearing FULL doughboy kit including a rifle slung over his shoulder and my best friend leaned over and said [not loud enough for the guy to hear] "that guy is why I have guns  ]

I've never had Indy comments, that's for sure. As crazy as this might seem to us, sitting in the Indy Gear "bubble", most people don't pick the jacket for an Indy jacket. I've had comments along the lines of it being a "pilots" jacket (so it does seem to evoke the A2 in some people's minds), but, generally speaking, it's either, "Nice looking jacket..." or nothing.

nobody made a comment about it when I wear my Indy jacket. No-one knows that it's an Indy jacket.

You're right. Most people would never recognize it as Indy's jacket, unless you tell them it is.

I guess I have a sick sense of humor. Once, when I was at the Smithsonian and wearing my Wested, I was looking at the display of the hat, whip, and jacket that was used in the Indiana Jones movies. I waited until there was a nice crowd of people around. I yelled out, "Hey, Honey! Check this out. Indiana Jones wore a jacket just like mine!"

I continued to look at the display for a few moments, while watching people look out the corner of their eyes at me, and then look at the display. Then, some would start staring at my jacket and then looking back and forth at the display as if they were counting stitches.

I then strolled off nonchalantly, smiling to myself thinking that I just got even for some of the sarcastic things the general public has sometimes said to us about fedoras.

I was actually down on the mall, right in front of the Smithsonian yesterday, for the National Book Festival. Living as close as I do to DC, I probably will pull this stunt at the American History Museum again, sometime. For some reason. I just can't help myself.

While at the National Book Festival, I got to hear several authors speak. I heard my favorite BBQ writer, Steven Raichlen. He teaches BBQ University at the Greenbriar Resort in West Virginia, and BBQU is also shown on Public Television. I have never been to BBQU, as it costs around $4,000 per person for three days. Of course this does include your three day stay at the resort that I think starts at around $775 per night.

He spoke about the history of BBQ, and was quite interesting. He said that we got to witness something that doesn't happen very often, Mr. Raichlen wearing a tie. He said that he had to, as he had just come from breakfast at the White House. He said, "Isn't America great. A guy that writes about BBQ can get invited to the White House for breakfast!"

He is one of the niceset guys you would ever want to meet. You could just tell watching him meet people. I got him to autograph my copies of his books, How to Grill and BBQ USA. My copies get used. He is a great cook, having been to culinary school at two schools in Paris. He joked at all my recipes and notes and bookmarks and things stuck in my books. He said he was looking to see what all I have been cooking.

I also got to meet another author that I have all of his books, Jeff Shaara. His father won the pulitzer prize for Killer Angels, and Jeff made a trilogy of his father's work, by penning Gods and Generals and Last Full Measure. He went on to right several more books.

I heard Jeff Shaara speak and it was so fascinating. I was able to get him to autograph my copies of Gods and Generals and Last Full Measure.

I then came home and watched college football. All in all, I had a busy day.

Righto..Same here. Most I ever hear is..."Nice leather coat!" Then they are AMAZED if you inform them it is an Indy Jones jacket. I think the general public is in the dark as to even the basic IJ jacket details. I guess that's for us to know. The hat much more obvious in today's world. Oh hey Buff... My wife and two girls were at the DC Book Festival yesterday too!!! My youngest is well on the way to becoming an IJ Fan as well!!

All i ever get is compliments on mine. That's what is cool about the jacket, nobody knows it's an Indiana Jones jacket. The hat on the other hand.....all you'll ever hear is, "What do you think you are Indiana Jones or somethin'?".

It's just a theory, but perhaps the odds of receiving Indiana Jones comments are proportionate to the amount of distressing on the jacket. :-k

I wore my jacket to an opening night at a local theatre - and one of the actors at the after party spotted it and said "Great Indy - is that a screen accurate one?"
He was the only one who ever understood what it was.

FYI- My wife just returned from a DC visit today. The LC Jacket is now temporarily on display at Smithsonion's Air and Space Museum due to current renovations at the American History Museum.

Laughed my lips off  :D :D

now what you need to add is an MP3 player with small external speakers so as you turn away the Raiders march quietly begins to play

I bought a Star Wars game and when you pushed on the case it would play The Star Wars theme. I pulled it out, and carried it in my lab coat. I would tell my young payments what I was going to do, then told them I could not do it until the HERO music started, then I would reach in and squeeze the play button, look around like I did not know where the music was coming from then begin their casting procedure

In fact....Nothing! Frankly I'm a little dismayed about this fact! I'd even take the occasional "What do you think you are Indiana Jones or somethin'?". I mean, I'd consider it an honour of someone was to notice an actual Indy jacket on me.

I'm really hoping that things will pick up a bit next summer with the new movie coming out. :)

I didn't know that they still had the jacket on display while they are doing the renovations. Did they have the fedora and the whip also, or just the jacket?

I hope when they finish the renovations, they put the Indiana Jones items in their own display, and not in a case with a huge picture of Spock and a bunch of Star Trek stuff.

We had enough people in DC Saturday that we could have had a little mini-summit!

I'm glad some of you got a little chuckle out of my stunt. Aeris, you know me well enough to know that I'm half crazy. I almost thought I over did it with my little stunt I pulled on Curator Rick at the Finger Lakes Summit. I thought he was gonna blow a head gasket. What a cool dude and a great friend (still) once he found out we were only joking. I was concerned there for a minute that I was gonna get hit upside the head with one of those 2X4s. I know my days of Rick getting even are coming.

A few years ago, a bunch of gearheads all went down to the Smithsonian to see the Indy display. I can't remember if I wore my jacket and my fedora or not. I may not have had my jacket on depending on the weather. I was thinking that I may have pulled the same stunt at the display then, but I really can't remember. It wouldn't have the same effect if you have on the fedora and the jacket. Maybe I didn't do it then, seeing five or six people dressed as Indiana Jones running around the museum might spoil it.

It was funny in the Natural History museum. Minnesota Jones was dressed in Indy Gear and he is truly an expert on dinosaurs. He was walking around telling me all about the dinosaurs on display, and we hadn't even noticed that a crowd had formed and was following us around the museum. People thought that the way he was dressed and the way he was talking, that he was a tour guide. We realized what they were thinking when someone told their son to ask MJ where the restroom was.

I have actually never heard anything but positive comments about the jacket but NOBODY pegs it as an Indy jacket. A buddy of mine bought an A2 from Peter a number of years ago - The Memphis Belle one where he paints the Nose art onto the back. He wore it to work (works in Television) and a woman came up to him and told him the jacket was sexist. After that he did not wear it and ended up selling it on eBay. Too bad really. Nice jacket.

I would have told her where to get off.

I've only had positive comments on it while travelling, but also no one has pegged it as an Indy jacket. A great jacket for travelling around the world.

OMG...that has to be one of the funniest things i have EVER heard. I just wish i could have seen peoples reactions in person. I know if i had been there i woulda been comparing the jackets as well. That is just too funny.
