TOD screen accurate fedora help!

Post by justin771 »

I would like to get a fedora similar to the one pictured below. I'm leaning toward Todd's HJ with TOD styling. I'v been reading the archives and learned both HJ's and Stetson Temples were used on the production. It sounds like the Stetson Temple is a far cry from what it was back in 84. Has the HJ changed since TOD in production materials, etc? I'm most interested in finding out if the fedora pictured is HJ or Stetson? My knowledge is minimal, so I defer to the resident fedora experts.

:D

Not necessarily. Just because it has a number with an 'x' behind it, doesn't mean much of anything anymore. It just means it's made of fur, and there may be a percentage of beaver mixed in with the rabbit fur.

What i meant is they might charge less for a lesser quality fur.

That's not necessarily true anymore. Apparently at Stetson, 2x is wool, and some (if not all) 3x are wool as well

That TOD hat came off of a tapered block, plus the radius of the top starts quite a ways down the crown. To me it resembles the Stetson Temple, that has been re-creased. But I have seen HJs with that same blockshape. Hard to call which hat was used until you look at the bow on the ribbon. From what I have seen, that bow is pure HJ(post raiders) with the 4 tack points on the middle of the bow. That is an identifying characteristic that you can look for to determine if it was a Stetson, or an HJ. To my knowledge, only the post Raiders HJs used the 4 tack points, and still do from what I have seen. On the other hand, the non visible tack points on the Raiders HJ, as well as the vintage HJ is how they used to do their bows. Makes me think, someone else made these hats, instead of HJ. Like a subcontrator. Or perhaps just a personel change. I just think it is odd that they completely changed the way the bows were made. Fedora
Thanks for all the great info. This was the intial post that caught my atttention regarding the Stetson Temple vs HJ as the TOD hat. I also remember hearing an actual screen used TOD on a prop site was a stetson. I'm still leaning towards Todd's HJ. It seems like the modern HJ's still maintain the specs of TOD era hat.

In my humble opinion, the HJs are too tall for the TOD fedora. But... The hat that Stetson still sells as the Temple feature the right specs. The good thing about the HJs, is they will shrink and taper into the TOD hat. This may be a time when the tendency to shrink and taper, is actually a good thing. Buy an HJ, wear it in the rain, let it dry and voila' you will have what you are looking for. Fedora

i don't know steve....maybe the stetson temple that i bought off the factory outlet store is a different spec hat than what you are describing. the beast that i have, i'd be surprised if the crown is bigger than 5" open. also, there's just way too much taper for it to be anything close to an indy hat....and the ribbon is completely wrong.

are they making different speced stetson temples as far as size and shape? i know that they make the pinacle stetson but it should have the same specs as the normal hat but with premium fur. i would feel more at home spray painting my temple black and going as either jake or elwood....for now, i just use it as a throwing hat to see if i can get her on the coat rack from across the room

Could be a differently spec'ed hat. I recall that the old Stetson Nostalgia came with a 5 inch open crown, from the factory, but some guys bought Nostalgias from a factory outlet, factory rejects that were taller than the regular factory hats. So, it is possible the Temple you speak of was a "second" and not the same dimensions as the ones I bought years ago. But then again perhaps not. The Temples that I owned were, I think around 5 inches tall if you popped the crown out, and around 4 3/4 tall on the sides with the factory creases. Brim was 2 5/8 by 2 3/8. A fan here posted a pic of his Temple, creased in TLC style months ago, and it was a dead ringer for the hat at the end of TLC to my eyes. Wish I had the time to find that post and show the hat. It looked really accurate to TLC, and also TOD if I recall correctly.

On the taper of the Temple, yeah, it does have taper, but so does some of those hats in TOD. Since Stetson placed hats in those films, from what I understand, and the Temple is supposed to be the same hat.........well, they look very similiar to me. If you have the time search for that post where the guy has his Temple styled in several styles. Compare his LC creases to the hat at the end of the film. It looks to be a dead ringer, and does not look too short. On the other hand, many hats look too tall to me, that we post here. I don't think there was a 5 3/4 crowned hat in ANY of the Indy films. They just don't look that tall. I think they ran from 5 to 5 1/2 depending upon the film. (open crown)

When the new film comes out, pay attention to the hat Indy is wearing at the train station. That one is 5 3/4, and the only hat in the film that is that tall. I bet many will see how it looks taller than any hat Indy ever wore in the preceding films. I can't wait to see it myself. Fedora

i believe that post was from 'inexpensive jones'....i recall looking at all of the bashes he did with his stetson temple. i referenced his pictures when i received mine and i can honestly say that his hat is much different than what i got. as far as my stetson goes, "that dog won't hunt"

the best thing about that hat was the hat box it came in.
