...could someone here tell me which type of knot is used to cover the thong conjuction of Indy's whip? I was looking through "How To Make Whips" at the different styles of knots. The book contains instructions on how to do a Spanish ring knot, as well as a Turk's head. Which one is used to cover the thong conjuction on most professional bullwhips. Is one more practical than the other? If someone could explain some of this to me, that would be more than appreciated.

The knot on the junction is just another form of Turks Head. I am not looking at a whip now, but I will guess that is a 4 - 3 combination (bite vs. part). In Ron Edwards book "How to Make a Whip", you can see most of the common Turks Head variations used on the junction.

I should probably run down to the workshop and check my book to be sure, but I'm fairly certain it's the 5 part 4 bight turkshead that is used on the handle/thong junction and the knob of the whip. I haven't actually looked at it in a while because I've tied it so many times lately I can almost do it blindfolded. When I go down to my shop later I'll double check and re-post the name if I'm incorrect.

Thanks for the info guys. I have to feel stupid now after studying the book more thoroughly. As I discovered this morning, the Spanish ring knot is based on the 3 part - 4 bite Turk's Head, so they are pretty much one in the same. Oh well, thanks for your help...

Just to be complete and again, my book is not handy or my David Morgan whip, but I believe the knot on the heel is not a 4 bite, 3 part knot. I think that one is a 5/4 on the heel.
